“Don’t leave him,” I blurt, trying as hard as I can to form the words.

Sirens blare in the distance.

“Shit, cops are on their way. Gonna get outta here. Call you back.”

No! We can’t leave without my brother.

Maddox jumps into the driver’s seat and turns on the engine.

As soon as he shifts the gear stick, the door swings open, and Samuel jumps in the passenger side. “Go!”

I exhale in relief at hearing his voice.

Maddox hightails it out of the driveway.

“Go left through the gates,” Samuel instructs. “Hospital’s that way.”

“She might be pregnant,” Maddox says.

“Yeah, I know.”

“Everyone did but me apparently,” Maddox mutters.

“Mellie, can you hear me?” Samuel grabs my hand.

“Mm-hmm,” I respond without moving.

“That’s a good sign. Hopefully that means you don’t have a concussion but try to stay awake until we know for sure.”

“Okay,” I murmur, fighting with my eyes to keep them open.

“Did you get the footage you needed?” Maddox asks him.

“I think so. Yanked out the entire server or whatever Troy called it. He’s a tech wizard.”

“She probably stores everythin’ in a cloud server too, but at least we’ll have proof,” Maddox says.

“I’m sure she does, yeah.”

“Your husband’s pretty smart with tech stuff, huh?”

“Oh yeah. Had a lot of connections when we lived in California and quickly made some when we moved.”

“Why would you move to Alabama?”

Samuel chuckles. “Troy has family there, and I liked the idea of being closer to Amelia. I hoped to one day reach out to her when the time was right.”

“I can’t imagine thinkin’ my brother was dead all these years. What a mindfuck.”

“Oh, I know.” Samuel’s sorrowful tone breaks my heart. “Do you have siblings?”

“Four younger brothers and sisters.”

“You’re the oldest, huh? Are y’all close?”

“Oh, yeah. We live on our parents’ property and help run the B&B and ranch. Talon’s only a year younger than me, so we’ve always been connected at the hip.”

“That sounds amazin’. I’ve always wanted horses. Chickens and goats, too.”
