“Wait, we need the security footage to give to the cops,” Samuel insists. “Or we’ll have no proof.”
“Do you know how to do that?”
“Troy does. I’ll call him, and he can talk me through it. You take Amelia back to the car.”
“He’s leavin’ him inside?” Bodie asks me.
“I guess.” My nerves light up with panic. “Not sure that’s a good idea.”
“Here, take my other gun. The safety’s off,” Maddox tells him.
“I’ll be out in five minutes,” Samuel says.
“I’m gonna head over there,” I tell Bodie, walking out of the office to grab my boots and keys.
“Let me come with you,” Bodie pleads. “You’re not in your right mind to drive yourself.”
“Fine,” I agree instead of arguing. “Tell Bellamy.”
AMELIA
“Amelia? Can you hear me?” A deep voice above me pierces through my throbbing head.
“Mm?”
“It’s Maddox. You’re okay.”
I manage to move my lips and mutter, “Samuel?”
“He’s still inside, but he’s comin’.”
Alone?
“The baby.” I barely manage to get the words out. Even though I’m not far along, the stress or a spike in blood pressure can cause pregnancy issues.
“What?” Maddox asks. “Samuel will be right back. Hold tight.”
“Am I bleedin’?”
“Yeah, whatever she whacked you with must’ve been hard. Gonna use my shirt to add pressure to the wound.”
My vision’s blurry, but I watch as he stands outside the SUV and removes it before placing it underneath my head. “Try to stay still.”
When we first met over video chat and then in person this morning, it was clear why his cousins call him a lumberjack and mountain man. He towers over me.
Maddox answers his phone when it vibrates.
“Hey.”
“Yeah, waitin’ on Samuel.”
“No, I haven’t seen anyone else. The nurse who came in was smart enough to go back to wherever she came from.”
“She’s conscious, but I can’t understand what she’s sayin’. Somethin’ baby.”
“Oh fuck, why didn’t y’all tell me that?”
“Mhm. Well, if Samuel doesn’t come out soon, I’m drivin’ her to the hospital.”
