After hearing back from Maddox on what he dug up on her mom, we made a plan for her to go there. They’d set up an appointment to look at caskets, and she’d make sure Samuel and Maddox drove them to it, which is when Amelia would bring up her trust fund and the information she has on her. And since they’d be in the SUV, she wouldn’t be able to escape, but ifshe tried to threaten or hurt her, Maddox would be right there to intervene.

And if necessary, Samuel would reveal himself.

The screen goes dark as they walk through the house. Samuel whispers to Maddox, but I can’t hear what he’s saying.

“This is freaky as shit,” Bodie says, his shoulder glued to mine.

“This way,” Samuel tells Maddox. He uses his phone as a flashlight, so I can see the floor and walls. When someone’s shoes echo on the hardwood, Samuel pulls open a door. “In here.”

“What the fuck?” Maddox’s panicked voice makes my heart drop.

“This is new,” Samuel says. “Or maybe we just never knew they had cameras everywhere. Holy shit.”

Maddox holds up the phone, and my eyes widen at the wall of surveillance monitors. It’s a whole ass control room.

“I don’t see her anywhere.” Samuel scans each screen. “Her old bedroom light is on, which is odd. She might be in there somewhere.”

“Let’s go.” Maddox puts me back in his pocket and pulls out one of his guns.

For a big guy, he’s better at keeping quiet than I assumed he’d be. No wonder he tracks people down so easily.

He follows Samuel down a hall and then up a grand staircase.

“Down here,” Samuel whispers.

They approach a door and turn the knob. “It’s locked.”

“Move,” Maddox orders before he backs up and kicks it open with his boot.

“Holy fuck,” Bodie mutters when the door flies open.

Both of them swarm inside, calling her name.

Maddox goes to the perfectly made bed, but it’s empty.

“In here,” Samuel calls from across the room.

There’s too much commotion to see anything, but then I see a mess of blonde hair and blow out a relieved breath that they found her.

“She alive?” Maddox asks.

“Yeah, but her head’s bleedin’. We gotta get her to a hospital.”

“Hey!” A woman’s voice makes Bodie and me jump. “You can’t be in here! I’m callin’ the police!”

Maddox lifts Amelia in his arms, and the movement covers the screen, but I can still hear them.

“Do that, and I’ll shoot you,” Maddox warns.

“Who’re you?”

“Don’t worry ’bout it. Go back to your job, and you won’t get hurt.”

She must run off because Maddox barges out of there.

“She’s okay, Colt. We’re gettin’ her outta here.”

“Thank God,” I murmur.
