“You are.” It was my turn to smile at him. Coolly. Definitively. “We’ll talk later. When I’ve had time to think.”

For a moment, I thought he might argue. Then he inclined his head again, that infuriating smirk still playing at his lips. “Of course. But Delia?” He paused at the threshold, his dark eyes finding mine. “Don’t take too long. The clock’s already ticking.”

Then he was gone, his footsteps fading far down the hallway with unnatural quiet before I fully registered him moving through the door.

Claire set down her armload of tech with a thud, staring from the doorway and back to me. “Okay. What the hell was that?”

I sighed, sinking onto the cream-colored couch.

“That,” I said, “was a terrible decision.”

“Mm…” she responded, scooting to the door to peek out. “Well, please tell me we’ll be making more of those.”

I snorted, my hand drifting to the amulet, now cool and steady in my grasp. “Oh, I’m pretty sure you can count on it.”
