I believe it too when, one cool February afternoon I take the tube to Euston. Checking the boards, I spot a train to Shugbury. But I’m not looking for that one. I turn instead towards the arrivals board and see that the train I’m waiting for is arriving on time.

I wait in the allotted spot, where Alice found me and decided I was the right Kate. My heart quickens as all around me people are rushing for trains, or staring at the board, and next to me someone is chomping an enormous baguette.

I wait and wait, aware of my heart racing until I spot him, and he waves, his face literally lighting up at the sight of me. He weaves his way towards me, as I do towards him until here’s right there, folding his arms around me. ‘So, here you are!’ he says, kissing me.

‘Here I am.’ I beam at him, pulling back and taking in his lovely face. A whole week, Fergus has managed to take off from the shop. He might even stay longer. There aren’t many customers at a second-hand bookshop at this time of year.

He takes my hand and we cross the station concourse together. ‘So what shall we do?’ he asks eagerly.

London has everything, I told my little brother all those years ago. ‘I’m not sure,’ I say now. ‘I haven’t made plans.’ He smiles and kisses me gently and a million sparks seem to shoot through me.

‘We could just... see what happens?’ he suggests.

Then we head to the tube together, and a whole future that we can’t even begin to imagine. ‘Yes, let’s do that,’ I say. ‘Let’s just see.’
