On Friday, we’re ready for a home game. Samantha and I sit in the stands as the team takes the ice.
I sigh, looking at Alexander.
Seeing him in his element, leading the team confidently through both good and bad times.
When the game starts, I’m on the edge of my seat, hoping their tough period is over.
Alexanders told me that they’ve had team meetings more frequently and he’s been working with several of the guys, helping them gain their confidence back on the ice.
When people heard about Caleb practicing with Alexander, several reached out to him and asked if they could join.
Pride surges in my chest whenever he speaks about his team; his determination and commitment are steady. He may consider those practices part of his responsibilities, something expected of him.
Seeing the guys he’s been helping perform stronger on the ice is confirmation that it’s working.
The team is still struggling; there isn’t a quick fix to things like this, but at least they’re playing with more willpower.
The first period is challenging. The guys are fighting as hard as they can, but the last piece of the puzzle is missing.
The other team scores one goal, putting them ahead in the first break.
“This is so nerve-wracking,” Samantha says beside me, and I couldn’t agree more.
“Tell me about it.”
During the short break, we buy snacks we can stress-eat during the next period.
Liam is up in the goal, and I sense Samantha’s nerves intensifying. I really need to dig deeper into their relationship, but this isn’t the time or place.
Luckily, Liam does a marvellous job in goal, whilst the guys manage their game better, earning a goal and making the score 1-1 as we head into the last period.
The atmosphere in the arena is electric, the fans cheering the Coyotes on for dear life, hoping we’ll get a win after weeks of losses and ties.
“Come on. Come on,” I murmur, feeling anxious and hopeful that the guys will push through.
With three minutes remaining on the clock, the defence does a brilliant job, managing to direct the puck precisely and clear to the forwards.
The right winger sends the puck to Alexander, and he fires at the goalie.
When the puck goes into the net, the arena erupts, and we jump up from our seats.
“Yes! That’s our captain right there!” Samantha yells beside me, and I feel pride swell in my chest.
The team circles Alexander, giving him side-hugs and cheering him on as he skates around the arena.
In the last few minutes, the guys are fired up and energized, seeing the win within their reach. When the clock buzzes, the celebration begins.
I hug Samantha, both of us giddy from excitement.
After the game, the entire team is energized and riding high from a much-needed win.
And the centre of attention is my man.
Scoring the winning goal, whilst being the steady leader he is, Alexander handles the attention with grace.
I watch in awe, trying to get some content as well, not just ogling him during his interviews.
