“You good? You seem off.”
“No, but you need to get him to the hospital. Just… let Lucy know that I love her and nothing could change that.”
He looks at me quizzically and nods as I hop out of the rig.
I sigh, surveying the rest of the landscape around me as Hardy drives off. We probably still have several more hours before we’ll be able to leave, but I get to work checking on the whole squad, making sure everyone has food and is hydrated so we can power through.
I’m too exhausted to drive home so I hitch a ride with Blaze. When I stumble into my apartment much later, I take the quickest shower known to man and collapse on the bed naked, pulling my new clean white sheets over me, too tired to even throw on underwear as I pass out from exhaustion.

Just heard from Hardy.
Mike is okay.
Hardy saw him on the scene when Mike saved a rookie who passed out and Mike asked Hardy to tell you that he loves you and nothing could ever change that.
Were those his exact words?
That’s what Hardy told me.

This is good news.
Then why haven’t I heard from him?
I don’t know, but Hardy said the fire was almost out when he saw him.
Said he looked miserable and exhausted, but he was fine.
He probably went home andcrashed.
What if I scared him off?
What if he doesn’t come to the program tomorrow?
Micah invited him. He’ll be there.
I hope so.
