“Brynholf’s being a douche about everything,” I said.“He’s taking his oversight role way too seriously.I think. They’re going to have to watch their P’s and Q’s about everything.”

“That’s not what I meant,” Tamara said. And then, softer: “You know that.”

“Things are things,” I said with a sigh.“Eddie and Vic still hate one another.Nagisa is so wrapped up with patching things up with his gang, I think he’s completely embarrassed. He’s avoided me entirely. And Brother Al…” I shook my head.“I don’t know what he wants.I even feel like things are different between me and Eddie, and me and Vic.Eddie keeps treating me like I’m made out of glass, and it’s like Vic spends half his time reading books anymore.I hate to say it, but more boyfriends don’t necessarily mean more happiness.”

“Maybe you better focus on just one,” Tamara said.

“You can’t make me choose,” I said.

“No,” she said.“And they can’t make you choose, either. But if you don’t.”

“What?”I snapped.

Joey looked up from the menu, staring between us.

“Everything okay, ladies?”he asked.

“Joey,” Tamara said.“What do you want off the menu?”

“I don’t know,” he said.“Everything looks good, if I’m being honest.”

“How much do you think you can eat in the same meal, though?”Tamara asked.

“Ah, fair point.”

“You spend too much time looking at the menu and weighing your options and the store might close,” Tamara said.

“Alright, I’m hurrying,” Joey said.

“I’d like a box, please,” I said to Sal.

Tamara and I stared at each other until I put my salad away, and I walked out the door.I had one thought as I heard the front doorbell jingle as I left.

She wasn’t wrong.
