“Maybe we should talk to that lawyer, Charles, that works for Fallon and Trevor. Get things settled legally.”
I nod in agreement and stand up. “There’s more I need to tell you guys, but Aurora needs to be part of it. Once she wakes up, I promise, I’ll tell you everything.”
Prez steps up to me and gives me a brief hug. “Family,” he states.
Dustin joins us, throwing his arms around our shoulders. “Family,” we say together.
Chapter 65
I’m in a dark tunnel that seems to go on forever. A pinpoint of light appears in the distance, a halo of illumination encircling the silhouette of a man. He reaches a hand out to me. I want so badly to take it, but I’m too far away.
“Come back to me, Aurora. Take my hand and never let go.” That’s Jackson’s voice. “I love you so much, baby. Don’t leave me, Aurora. Come back to me, sweetheart.”
“Jackson,” I call to him, but he’s fading away as the light flickers out and I’m surrounded by darkness once again.
His voice finds me in the black nothingness. “Sleep, sweetheart. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
What is that godawful beeping noise? I groan, trying to open my eyes, but they are heavy like lead, impossible to open.
“Get Fallon. I think she’s waking up. Baby. Open your eyes for me, beautiful.”
I feel pressure on my left hand, like something is squeezing it. Why can’t I move my right arm?
“Come on and open those gorgeous blue eyes. I need to see my sunshine.”
“Jackson?” Is that my voice? I sound awful.
“Hey, there she is. Fight it, Aurora. I need you to open your eyes for me, baby.”
“I can’t,” I croak. “Too heavy.”
I feel soft lips kiss each eyelid. Oh, that feels good. So much nicer than the elephants tap-dancing on my brain. God, I hurt everywhere.
“Hood rat. We need you to wake up now.”
Knox is here?
“Austin said she’s waking up?”
Fallon too?
“Yeah. She’s being stubborn though. Typical,” I hear Shelby say.
I mumble out, “Would everybody shut the hell up. My head hurts.”
“There’s my girl,” JD says, a distinct smile in his voice, and my eyes finally open. Everything is blurry and, “God, turn off the fucking lights,” I growl. My eyes are watering and stinging from the bright fluorescent lights.
Someone wipes my lids with a warm, wet cloth.
“Thanks,” I tell whoever did that. This time when I open my eyes again, things aren’t so blurry.
JD is hovering over me. “Hey, baby. Trevor is getting the nurse and doctor. How do you feel?”
“Like roadkill.”
“You may look like it too,” Prescott says, and it takes every bit of strength for me to lift my left hand and give him the middle finger. JD promptly takes my hand and kisses each finger and knuckle.
“Alright, everybody. Please step outside so we can check over our patient. Hi there, sweetheart. I’m Pamela, your nurse. Looks like you’ve finally decided to join us.”
