I flip the phone and hand it to Shelby. If anyone will see what I do, it’ll be her. “Shelby, what do you see?”
She takes my phone and flips back and forth between the images. She looks up at me, eyes wide and mouth hanging open.
“That’s what I thought too.”
“Are you two having some telepathic conversation that I’m not privy to?”
“Connor looks just like Prescott,” Shelby whispers, the back of her hand going up to her mouth.
“What? Let me see that again,” Renee demands, taking my phone from Shelby.
“That’s the bad thing I did.”
Shelby gives me a horrified look. “Please tell me you didn’t do what you are insinuating.”
I nod, shame filling me.
“Rory, you can’t play God like that. You had no right! What if it turns out to be true? You’d be destroying not only a family but also one of your best friend’s life.”
“I know! I know that! I wasn’t thinking when I did it, and now it’s too late.”
Shelby stands up. “It’s never too late to right your wrongs. And if you hurt Prescott, I swear I’ll never forgive you, Rory.” She places some cash on the bar and walks out.
“Shelbs, don’t leave.”
She shakes her head and flings her hand up as she throws open the door to leave.
“Renee?” I turn to look at her.
“I think I’m going to need a lot more drinks. Ben! I need three shots of tequila lined up, stat!”
“You sure?” he asks while mixing a drink.
“Positive.”
“Be right up then.”
“I’ve messed up big time, haven’t I?” I ask her.
Renee takes my suddenly cold hands in hers. “You know Shelbs. She’ll cool off and be calling you by tomorrow morning. I agree with her about not hurting Prez. With that being said, if Connor is his, he deserves to know.”
“And what happens to JD? He could lose a son he fought so hard for. Oh my God. I really, really messed up. What’s wrong with me? Why would I do such a thing?”
“My opinion? I think you were looking for answers as to why. To all the whys that have been floating around in your head since JD just up and left after telling you he loved you.”
“Renee, there is so much that doesn’t make sense, and it all has to do with the day that JD disappeared. I have a feeling that he’s keeping something from me.”
“About Connor?”
“I don’t know, Renee. I just have this feeling that there is more to JD’s sudden disappearance five years ago—that there’s more to him cutting off all ties with everyone—than he’s telling me.”
“I guess the question is: What are you going to do about it, and how far are you willing to go to know the truth?”
Chapter 52
Igive a loud wolf whistle when Trevor walks into the kitchen. “Someone looks all handsome and fancy.” I stab a fork in my simple salad and bite into the balsamic-laden goodness.
Trevor does a man-model twirl, opening his jacket and then finishing in a GQ stance. “I take it you approve?”
