Then again, at this point, who gives a fuck, right? The business is going down. Jude is going to be pissed at me anyway, might as well relish what I’ve been wanting to have for God knows how long. Let me have this fucking day.

Let me enjoy.

“Now we need one together. Oooh, I have an idea, you can pretend you’re proposing to me in front of the Abbey, and I can act all shocked. We can get a round of applause and maybe a free tea and crumpet.”

“That’s not how it works.”

“You never know. A local tea merchant might walk by and see us and offer us a free tea to celebrate. Oooh, that’s what we should do. We should spend the day, you down on one knee, proposing in various places to see if we can get anything free.”

“You realize I could purchase anything you might want, right?”

She rolls her eyes. “I know that, but it’s more fun when you get it for free. An absolute thrill. Come on, it’ll be fun. Plus, you never proposed to me, so this would be you making it up to me.”

I eye her.

“Please.” She tugs on my arm. “I promise to suck your dick for a solid twenty minutes when we get back to the hotel. You can set a timer.”

I mean…having her mouth on my cock for twenty minutes, doubt I would last two minutes, but I’m not going to turn that down.

“Fine,” I say, exasperated.

She chuckles and then whispers, “Sucker, I planned on sucking your dick for that long tonight anyway.” She takes off her wedding ring, which I don’t care for, and hands it to me. “You have to take yours off too or people are going to think you’re an adulterer.”

“I don’t like you taking your ring off.”

She rolls her eyes dramatically. “Okay, Mr. Possessive. Don’t worry,I’m going to say yes when you propose. You can slip it right back on.” She nudges me. “Now come on, let’s get free things.”

She takes my phone from my hand and glances around, then she stops a person walking by and asks, “Could you take a video of us in front of the Abbey?”

“Of course,” the woman says as she hands her water bottle to her friend.

As Sloane pulls me into position, I take my ring off and slip it into my pocket. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve taken part in. Normally, this would not be something I would engage in, but right about now, pretty sure I give zero fucks about life, so I cozy up next to Sloane as she gives the camera peace signs.

She nudges me with her hand, so I turn toward her, get down on one knee, and she shrieks in fake surprise, covering her hand with her mouth. Her reaction is comical, over animated, and absolutely ridiculous, but I go along with it.

Holding the ring up to her, I catch a crowd forming around us and I say, “Sloane, love of my life, I can’t imagine a day going by without you by my side. Will you make me the happiest man and be my wife?”

She shrieks again, nods, and holds out her hand. I slip the ring onto her finger, and she leaps into my arms, knocking me to the ground while the small crowd that has formed around us cheers.

She grips both of my cheeks and kisses me on the lips while I bring us both to our feet. I hug her. She hugs me. And then she waves to the crowd like Miss America being carted around on a float.

The woman taking our video walks up to us with a huge smile on her face. “That was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. So beautiful.”

“Thank you,” I say.

“If you don’t mind, could you take a few pictures of us posing?” Sloane asks.

“It would be my pleasure.”

The lady steps back and starts working the angles while Sloane kisses me. Holds out her hand, showing off her ring. She even has me dip her while the crowd around us cheers. It’s so fucking ridiculous, but also…I kind of like it.

When we’re done, we thank the lady, thank the people around us who offer us a congratulations, and hand in hand, we head toward the bus stop.

“Sheesh,” Sloane complains. “Not a single free item. Can you believe that?”

“I can,” I say. “We were in the middle of a touristy area. If you want free, you can’t be near a bunch of people who have nothing to offer that’s free.”

She pauses and looks up at me. “Oh my God, you’re right. We need something more local, more intimate. Not so flashy.” I can see that look in her eye.
