I shot out of bed and looked around in a near-death panic from Goldie screaming at the top of her lungs.
“My undies, my undies!” she cried.
The sheets were all jumbled together and there were lumps everywhere, but no sight of Goldie.
“That color is hideous on you, raptor. No, that’s my thong,” she yelled as she hissed and started swinging her arms, trying to identify her whereabouts.
I sat up and lunged to the bottom of the bed, on the righthand side, where her head was hanging off and she was swinging around with her dukes out.
“Jett got those for me, you blasted long neck. Go eat some leaves, herbivore!”
I was about to shake her awake until she started insulting dinosaurs. I couldn’t help it, I laughed out loud and from the pit of my stomach, something I didn’t do very often.
My laughter must have woken her up, because she jackknifed off the mattress and started swatting at the blanket that covered her head.
In the midst of laughter, I pulled the blanket off her head to find my little one wearing nothing and her hair falling over her face. Even in her crazy state of delirium, she was still the most gorgeous woman I’d ever seen.
“Holy crap!” She breathed heavily as she tried to smooth her hair out of her face.
“Dinosaurs eating your underwear?” I said in a teasing tone.
“What? How did you know?”
“Just screaming in your sleep, that’s all. I’m pretty sure I almost pissed myself when you woke me up yelling about dinosaurs eating your underwear.”
Goldie snorted and covered her mouth as she giggled. “Sorry about that. I don’t want no dino messin’ with my skivvies. It’s an honest request.”
“It is,” I said, pinching her chin with my thumb. “Now what we really need to discuss is why you’re sleeping like a lunatic, horizontally off the bed with your head hanging off the side.”
“Was I really?” She looked around and assessed her position. “Well, look at that.”
“I never sleep with women so you’re going to have to let me know if this is normal behavior,” I joked.
She took a second to think and then said, “To save my credibility, I’m going to say that other women usually sleep hanging from the ceiling and staring at you while you sleep, so me sleeping with my head hanging off the bed, horizontally, is almost normal.”
I laughed, again. It was a foreign thing to me but with Goldie, it started to become a norm.
I grabbed her by the waist and brought her down on my chest as I rested back on the mattress.
“So what you’re telling me is that I’m lucky you’re not hovering over me at night.”
“Pretty much. Consider me a rare breed.”
“Oh, I already know you’re a rare breed.” I kissed her chin before she placed her hands on my chest and rested her head on her hands as she looked down at me.
“I don’t want to go back to Diego’s. I want to stay here, with you.”
I let out a heavy breath as I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight.
“Me neither but we don’t really have a choice in the matter. I promise you though, this will be over soon. I have some things in the works, and I’m hoping a good distraction will throw some people off.”
“You really can’t tell me what’s going on?”
“Goldie, we talked about this. The less you know, the better, okay?”
“Okay. Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
