“Okay, girls. Have fun tonight. I’ll see you in the morning. Come give Mommy a hug.” I say as the two most adorable ghosts come running into my arms, linking their small limbs around my neck.
“I love you, Mommy.” They say at the same time.
“Listen to Mrs. Hannigan.” I say, watching them walk out the door with our trusty neighbor.
“Have fun tonight.” Mrs. Hannigan says.
“I plan to.” I respond, keys in hand.
The drive to the grounds seems to take forever, but finally, I ‘m turning down the familiar dirt road. It looks the same, like no time has past.
A flutter of nervousness churns in my stomach. What if they don’t remember me. Or worse, they do, and they want nothing to do with me.
I bring the car to a stop, parking in the last empty spot. It’s even busier than last year and looks ten times as intense. There are performers jumping around and people screaming already, and I haven’t even gotten past the entrance yet.
As soon as I shut my car door, I feel them. A shift in the air raises the small hairs on the back of my neck, and as I turn, I see them in the distance. All three looking at me with such intensity, I know in my gut that what I experienced last year at this same place wasn’t a fluke. It was real, and what we have together is real.
I walk with purpose towards them, ignoring the revelry that surrounds me, and instead hold the gaze of the three creatures that rule my heart and soul.
“Hey.” I say, feeling the nerves take over.
“It’s been a year and you open with hey?” Matchbox spits out.
Unease fills my chest. Maybe this was a bad idea. It’s been too long.
“Shut up, Matchbox.” Talon says, stepping forward and tucking my hair behind my ear. “I like your haircut.” He says leaning down and smelling my neck.
“Th-thank you.”
“Mmm still the same little ghoul I remember.” He groans, licking my sensitive skin and raking his fangs against my flesh. I shudder, remembering how good they all felt all too well.
“We’ve missed you.” Phantom says, taking me into his grasp. I let him pull me into a hug, feeling every defined muscle press against my front.
“Fine, yes. We missed you.” Matchbox admits and I let out a chuckle.
“Actually, I only came to get my missingSleeptokenhoodie I lost last year.” I joke.
“The only name I want to see splayed across those tits, are one of ours.” Talon says, smacking me on the ass and making me shriek with delight.
These creatures, these monsters, feel more like home to me than Trent ever did. Accepting me for who I am and making me better that who I was.
“Why don’t we get reacquainted by taking a stroll through the haunted house?” Phantom suggests, grabbing my hand and pulling me along.
“Lead the way.” I say, following them into the place that started it all—into the dark and surrounded by echoing screams.
