The nurse waited patiently in the corner of the room. Scout knew he needed to rest and that the doctors had to check Kendra over, but there was something he wanted to say.
“Killian,” he said. “That day, when I had that stupid idea to force myself into your life… that turned out to be the best stupid idea I ever had.”
“I agree,” Killian said with a smile. “I couldn’t imagine my life without you — both of you. I don’t even want to imagine it.”
“Me neither.”
“Kiss me,” Scout said.
Wordlessly, Killian leaned in and pressed his lips gently against Scout’s. They stayed like that for a moment, appreciating each other’s warmth and company, and full of affection for each other. When they broke away, it felt like an eternity had passed — one in which they were the only two people who existed.
Then baby Kendra let out a small grunt. Scout laughed. “I think she’s hungry,” he said. “And probably sick of her dads being all lovey-dovey.”
Killian grinned. “Well, being hungry is something we can take care of, but the lovey-doveyness is something she’s going to have to get used to, I’m afraid.”
The nurse stepped in to take Kendra and feed her, leaving the two mates alone in the room. Exhausted, Scout invited Killian to curl up in the hospital bed with him. They lay together, warm and comfortable and safe and — more than anything else — loved.
