When I looked up, Archer towered over me with a pair of copper cuffs in his hand. He crouched down, clucking his tongue softly.

“Hunter asked me to bring these when I came to take you,” he said. “They’ll help.”

“Take me?” I croaked.

“You’re my responsibility until they decide what to do with you,” Archer explained. “We’ll make sure you feel at home in lower Elysia. I do warn you, we’re a little less refined down there.”

Cautiously, I reached my hands out to him, and he clipped them around my wrists. The voices stopped instantly and the gold wisps that had materialised by the shores of the pool disappeared. A fresh wave of tears spilled over onto my cheeks at the relief.

Archer wrapped a hand around my wrist and hauled me to my feet. Gently, he wiped a tear from my face.

“Oh, Quentin. I told you they couldn’t be trusted.”
