“I couldn’t have done it without you. All of you.”
I looked around at them, my girls, my family, trying to preserve them in my mind like a snapshot pressed in the pages of a book, like a memory captured in one of Jo’s stories or Beth’s songs, seeing the patterns repeated in the next generation—in Alec’s thoughtful eyes and Daisy’s bright chatter, in the curve of DJ’s cheek and Robbie’s smile.
“That’s wonderful, sweetheart.” I hugged her tight. “I hope you’re always this happy. All of you.”
Beth leaned her head against my shoulder.
“We’ve had some rough spots,” Jo said quietly.
“And some smooth sailing,” Meg said.
Amy stuck out her chin. “I’m not afraid of storms. I’m learning how to sail my ship.”
I opened my arms to embrace them all.
Outside, the leaves turned red and gold and blew away. Troubles would come. They always did. But we would get through them—as we always had—together.
And in the meantime, there were moments like this.
Moments to hold on to. To look back on and remember.
