He’d been peppering me with questions the moment we got close to the city, to the point I could no longer answer them. It wasn’t just that he’d reached the end of my knowledge. Theycame so thick and fast, trying to reply was like shouting into a thunderstorm.

Is this the keep? This Hadrian was leading us into the city.It doesn’t seem like a very good home for dragons. I know the royal ones are very small, but… Ohhh, they live under the keep in that mountain. It’s very warm. That would be good for hatching eggs in. Perhaps our mate will bear our clutch there.

Fang—

Our mate will be beautiful and powerful and gleam brighter than the sun.We were circling down towards what I assumed was the roof of the keep. Dragons looked up as we drew closer and then took off in anticipation of our landing. These unworthy dragons flee before us, Fang gloated. They know…

The pause in chatter was such a relief, though I didn’t realise why. Just that my head had stopped aching, and I was able to hear my own thoughts for once. Then I discovered why. A large green dragon swept under us, but that wasn’t what caught Fang’s eye. Shimmering bright gold, just as Fang said, was a queen dragon, who landed on the roof next.

But the gold dragon wasn’t the one I focussed on, but her.

The woman slid from her dragon’s back, then raked back her hair, and for some reason that gesture was achingly familiar. As Fang’s wings worked, helping us to slowly descend, my eyes strove to take in every detail. Her eyes were wide with excitement, those pretty pink lips curved into a wild smile. There and then, I swore I would be the one to make sure she was happy for the rest of her days.

Right as she stepped forward and linked her arm with another man’s.

Tell Kael?—

He knows.Fang was uncharacteristically focussed. That queen dragon. She’s our mate.
