The slamming open of my back door stopped my words dead. I straightened up and flung my head in its direction, and there in the entryway of the room stood Addy holding a vanilla-frosted cake, topped with flickering candles.
“Happy birthday!” she sang out, “I never really made one of these—I always pretended the store-bought ones were mine—so I hope it isn’t riddled with egg shells.”
“You’re both here? You’re both okay? How?”
Mathias nudged his nose into the crook of my neck, fanning warm breath across my skin. “Erebus knew what you would have wished for, he knew deep in your soul what you truly wanted.”
What I truly wanted was love and a family.
He reached one hand up to touch my face. “You sacrificed yourself for me, more than once.” His lips touched down on the corner of my mouth. “I think you love me.”
I reached my hands up, wrapping them around his neck, and kissed him. “I think you’re right, Mathias. I think I really do.”
