“What’s going on?”
“I finally think that I figured out what I wanted to give you for Christmas.” He smiled and stepped towards me. “I mean, you’ll still have some gifts under the tree, but… This is your main gift. I can’t wait.”
He held out a small box, and I gasped. I mean… shit. Was he about to… No! I knew him better than that, and I also knew that we were heading in that direction, but Jim didn’t move this fast. But the box was… It was definitely the right size.
Was I ready? I wanted to be, but… I wasn’t ready right now. Not for a ring.
He stepped forward and handed it to me.
“I’m not getting down on my knees. I see the… uh… size of the box and… the look on your face. It’s not quite horror, but… It’s definitely not a look of… It’s not time for that yet. We both know it. But we also know that's where we’ll be. I want my life to be with you, Finn. We’ll say I do soon enough.”
“I want mine to be with you, too.”
“Open the box.”
I took it from his hand and slowly opened it. A key with a small red ribbon tied around it sat within it.
“You already have a key, I know. But this key is a permanent key if you get my drift. Will you move in with me, Finn? I want to wake up every morning beside you and go to bed with you in my arms every night. I mean, we practically do, but my closet misses the rest of your clothes, and my drawers need you to fill them. I think my walls want some of your art.”
“Are you sure?” I could feel the tears starting to fall.
“I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. My house has room to become your house, too. My life has plenty of space, and you’re the only person who can fill it.”
“Yes,” I whispered. I stood there unable to say anything else. If I tried to speak, I would burst into tears.
He took me in his arms, and I sighed against his chest. “Buffy was wrong. You give the best gifts in the world.”
“I think our life just began.”
“It did the moment I met you.”
When Jim kisses me, I lose myself.
I lost myself for the rest of the day.
