"Every settlement we can reach learns what the leaders of the ADF did before the virus killed so many and the mechs attacked."
Damn.
That'd do it.
Sawyer smiled and turned to look when the others walked in, their steps slowly as they took in the lit room. "Like what we've done with the place?"
"We have lights," Dahl mused as he stepped farther into the room.
"Where's Stefan?"
"Oh, he's coming." Dahl absently waved his hand back toward the direction they had come. "He had to grab a few things." The man frowned. "How did we get lights?"
"I'll let Roark explain it to you." He had something better to do.
He grabbed a lantern then hurried down the corridor and up the stairs. He ignored the fact that his steps increased in speed as he made his way toward the paddock. It had been days since he'd seen Stefan. Considering they had been separated for two years, his obsessive need to see Stefan was a little odd.
He just didn't care.
"Stef?" he called out as he walked into the former parking spot.
"Over here, Sawyer."
Sawyer made his way to where Stefan stood, brushing down a horse he'd never seen. "Hey."
Stefan grinned at him. "Hi."
"You're back."
"I'm back for good." Stefan pointed to a stack of bags. "I was able to get all of your stuff plus my own packed up and brought here. I had to leave the furniture behind, but I figured you wouldn't mind that too much. It's the personal items that are important."
"You got my stuff?" Sawyer asked as he glanced at the pile. "All of it?"
"Yep, I got all of it," Stefan replied. "Including these."
Sawyer's breath caught when he turned and saw the two golden rings lying in the palm of Stefan's hand. "You found our wedding rings."
"I had to." Stefan set the brush down and walked over until they stood pressed chest to chest. "You did promise to marry me, after all. Kind of need rings for that."
"Well, you did save my life." Sawyer picked up one of the rings and carefully slid it down Stefan's finger. He held up his hand and allowed Stefan to do the same with the other ring. "I guess it kind of belongs to you now."
Stefan's grin made Sawyer's heart clench. "I think we kind of saved each other."
"I'm good with that." Sawyer chuckled before leaning in to kiss Stefan. "I'm real good with that.
