* * * *
Will twisted his fingers together as he watched out the front window. His father was supposed to be here anytime and Will was a complete basket case. He just didn't understand why.
His dream of a father had died years ago, not too long after his mother passed away and the mysterious man had never come for him. He had briefly hoped he would, had prayed for his father's appearance. But no matter how hard he prayed, it never happened.
And now, he was coming.
Will didn't know what he felt exactly, except sick to his stomach. He was settled with Hector. He felt loved and safe and everything he thought someone should feel. Adding his father to that mix might upset the perfect balance he had found in Hector's arms.
He wouldn't allow that. If his father couldn't accept Hector in his life, then he wouldn't accept Will, and then he could go take a long walk off a short pier for all Will cared about.
"Baby, come away from the window."
Will glanced over his shoulder. "I was just…" He absently waved his hand back toward the window.
"I know, tesoro, but watching the window isn't going to make him appear any faster."
"No, I know." Will's shoulders slumped, which was better than having them tight with tension. "Can we finish the stone in the fireplace?"
"Now?"
Will shrugged. "I need something to do."
He took a step back when Hector's dark brown eyes took on a predatory gleam. He knew that look. He loved that look. Just not moments before he was supposed to meet his father for the very first time.
When Hector moved toward him, Will turned to run, but he was grabbed and pulled back before he could take two steps away. Will laughed as he was pulled into Hector's arms, the man's lips coming down on his lips.
Every ounce of tension in his body faded away under the ravishment of Hector's kiss. By the time Hector lifted his head, Will felt boneless with desire, but he also felt lighter.
"Thank you," he whispered.
Hector smiled. "Anything for you, tesoro."
Will started to tense when he heard a vehicle pull up into the driveway, but then he didn't. He just decided that there was nothing that could harm him as long as he had his lode stone. If his father didn't want him, he still had Hector. And if his father did want him, then he had his father and Hector. Whatever happened, he could handle it.
"I guess we'd better go greet my father, huh?"
"We probably should." Hector chuckled as he grabbed Will's hand and led him toward the front door. "It's the neighborly thing to do after all, and this is Cade Creek."
"A place for second chances."
Hector winked. "And lost treasures."
