“We can always leave the place dirty foryou,” Steele said.
Elizabeth shot Steele a look that… was a smile?
“Funny, Steele.”
Funny, indeed…
“Listen, we’re going to go grab some food at Southwest Dine since we’re here,” Tara said. “Will you come by after you finish here?”
I hesitated, only because I hated Tara and Elizabeth going out on their own in Santa Maria.
“You’ve got pepper spray, right?”
“Both of us, yep.”
“OK,” I said.
I looked around the room. We were pretty close to being done.
“I’ll head over in ten; just do me a favor and stay in your car until I get there.”
“You too?” Elizabeth interjected. “I’m sorry, I’m not being a third wheel. Uh, Steele?”
Steele looked up. Again, the two shared a look that was…funny.
“You three have fun.”
“Ugh,” Elizabeth said, going back to the car.
“We’ll catch up in a bit,” I said, kissing Tara one more time before she returned to the car.
Once both of them were out of earshot, I looked at Steele. He was deliberately not looking at me.
“So…”
“No way, never,” Steele said.
Like how Tara and I were “no way, never?”
But I didn’t press Steele on it. I didn’t need to.
I knew he would never pass up a chance at a Rogers girl.
