I rubbed my hand over my stomach one more time when Zeke turned his back on me. He got the fire started and the radio playing in the back yard as we waited for the countdown to New Year’s. It had literally only taken a week of us together for me to get pregnant and at midnight I was going to let Zeke know.
I made sure to go to the doctor yesterday while Zeke was at the garage, just to be sure. I had been feeling tender in my breasts and the doctor confirmed that it wasn’t common to know so soon, but my body was showing signs already. With the timeline, I was positive it happened the second we reconnected in his garage and that made the smile on my face grow even wider.
“What’s got you smiling, little star?”
Zeke came up to me and pulled me in close, the cold winter night wrapping tight around us. I shivered in his arms and he moved us closer to the fire.
“Just five more minutes before the new year starts!” The radio blared around us and I looked up at Zeke who had a smile of his own.
“I’ve got you in my arms, that’s why I’m smiling, but what’s got you all doe eyed, mechanic?”
I pushed a finger on his chest, teasing him.
“Just you, star.”
Zeke leaned down to kiss me, his lips rough against mine, taking what he wanted from me as he pulled me closer to him, lifting me slightly off the ground.
“Under one minute!”
“It’s almost here,” I said against Zeke’s lips and the butterflies started in my stomach.
I was about to tell him it wasn’t just going to be us anymore and I hoped to god that he wanted this as much as I did.
“Five!” The radio echoed in the forest.
“Four.” Zeke kissed me again.
“Three.” I placed a hand on his cheek.
“Two.” I pushed out of his arms and planted my feet on the ground and took the paper out of my back pocket that the doctor had given me, confirming my pregnancy.
“One.”
“Let’s get married tonight.”
“I’m pregnant.”
Both of us spoke at the same time, stunning each other into silence.
“Wait. What?” Zeke asked me, leaning down and placing a hand on my stomach while the other reached for the paper I was holding in front of him. “You’re pregnant?”
Tears welled in his eyes and I had to stop myself from crying.
“Yes.” I put my hand over his and thought about what he had said. “You want to get married tonight?”
He turned me around to where Father Morgan was standing with a bible in his hands.
“I called the Father yesterday.” Zeke turned me around and placed another kiss on my lips. “I wanted to start the year off with us being together in the best way possible, but you outdid my surprise.”
He stashed the paper in his back pocket and took me in his arms.
“Marry me. Be my wife. You’re already going to be the mother of my child. Take my last name and let’s start this year out like we should have so many ago.”
“Yes. A thousand times yes.”
I said against his lips and laughed as Zeke held me and Father Morgan married us in the back of our house and in that night, after only a week of us being back together, we became husband and wife.
But more importantly than that.
We became one.
He was my Zeke and I was his star.
