I drivedown the street I used to drive down countless times. It feels weird this time. The streetlights cast a glow as I slowly make my way through the street. As I slow the car down infront of the house with a light shining through the porch, I cut the headlights. I turn the engine off and sit for a moment.

I hope I’m making the right decision. I keep mumbling to myself.

As I walk up the driveway to the porch, my heart races with anticipation of what will happen next. Amari sits in my arms with her head on my shoulder. Breathing softly.

The rhythm of her breathing is calming down. Whatever happens, at least we have each other.

I take one step closer to the door, and a wave of nervousness washes over me as I press the doorbell. The silence of the night increases as I wait for an answer. The wait seems like an eternity. My mind is racing with anxiety. Faint footsteps echo through the door. The door handle makes a click and then the door opens up.

I take a deep breath as I stare at the big, brown eyes staring back at me in surprise.

“Hi, Mom.”
