"About what?"
"Father's estate. I want you to buy my share but let me stay on the board."
"Why in hell would I do that? Besides, your shares are worth nothing. You showed me yourself."
He breathed heavily into the phone. Probably drunk. "I know you have more than enough money ten times over. If you buy it, then it stays in the family."
"Oh, so I'm family now, hmmm?" After twenty years of him arguing I wasn't family, now that he needed my money, he thought he could play that card. Give me the one thing he thought I wanted most.
Then he tossed down the damn ace. "What about Cathy? If you buy my shares, you will have controlling interest, and you can use it to take care of her. She wouldn't be left with nothing, like she is now."
"You and I both know Cathy would resent me for it."
His voice took on a breathy tone. "We can make a deal. I won't tell her anything about it. She never has to know."
I never thought I'd see a day when I would give Hindley something he wanted. And badly, by the sound of it. But why wouldn't he? It would mean he wouldn't be left with nothing either. And I'd finally, finally, finally be acknowledged as an Earnshaw. Owning the esteemed Earnshaw Pictures would give my own newly built empire a little more luster.
"Get your lawyer and meet me at my house in an hour. We can go over the details."
"See you then." I tried to ignore his giddy tone and hung up.
Heaven help me. I just made a deal with a worse dick than me.
