I looked down at the brace I hadn’t even noticed. “I don’t need anyone to watch me, and I already have the day off. My father’s wake is today.”

Dr. Roberts slid the chart back and tucked his pen into his pocket. “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll call you as soon as the results come back. Is this young man going to take you home?”

He stared at Heath for a minute. “You look familiar. Maybe I’ve seen you here before.”

“Not likely,” I said. “Heath can take me home, but I can look after myself.”

Dr. Roberts turned his attention back to me. His eyes staring me down over the top of his rimless glasses. “Dr. Earnshaw, if you don’t agree to the terms, I’m going to keep you here until the test results come back.”

I still didn’t have enough energy for this. “Fine. Fine. Just get the paperwork in here please. And take this IV out so I can get dressed.”

Heath stood and sauntered closer to my bed. I could feel every step he took like a bubble preceded him to gobble me up into his orbit before he descended.

“You can wait in the hall until I get dressed,” I said, not looking up at his face. Even in the dark, I could trace every curve.

“Nothing I haven’t seen before.”

Reality pulled me under. “Nothing you haven’t seen in a decade. I assure you, I’ve changed.”

“You put on weight.”

I had enough energy to reach out and slap his arm. “Excuse me?”

“I only mean you were always so thin when we were kids. You’re healthier now. I like it.”

“Well, as long as I meet your standards, I guess my life is complete.” It wasn’t fair. He was trying, and I kept pushing him back. Besides he’d come here, at a stupid early morning hour for me. I softened my tone. “I’m sorry. Can you wait outside please?”

He reached out and tucked an errant strand of hair behind my ear. My skin hummed in anticipation of his touch. My body only knew the pleasure he gave me. My brain screamed at me to lean in and pull away at the same time.

When he dropped his hand, he smiled. “Hurry and get dressed. Then I’m taking you home.”

The way he said the word… “Home?”

He headed toward the door and slipped his hands into his pocket. As he walked out, he called back. “My home.”
