After a round of hugs, the two couples went their separate ways. Catherine stopped by the dressing room long enough to have the tiara removed from her hair then insisted she just wanted to get back to the cottage and would handle the rest of it herself.

She did slip her heels off and put a pair of fur-lined boots on. When she emerged in the hall, Jacob had his overcoat on and held one for her.

The walk to the cottage didn’t take long.

Once there, Catherine went to her closet to change clothes.

With her pyjamas comfortably in place, she sat in front of the mirror and began to remove the pins in her hair.

Ever the gentleman, Jacob asked before entering.

The first thing he had to have heard was her growling at a pin that just didn’t want to come loose.

He chuckled. “Let me help.”

Catherine closed her eyes as Jacob started where her hairline met her forehead and gently massaged her head as he worked his way backward, pulling out pins as he did. By the time he finished, she felt more relaxed than she had in days.

She let her head fall back against his abdomen and opened her eyes to look at his in the mirror. “Thank you. You can help with my hair any time you want.”

Jacob grinned. “I can help take it down sometimes if you’d like, but you wouldn’t trust me to try to make it behave before an event.”

He made her laugh. That had to be one of the reasons that, as his eyes held her gaze, she felt the impulse to say something that she knew had been sneaking up on her.

“I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you.” The words blurted out, rapid fire, and not at all tender and sweet like she would have hoped.

His smile widened. “That’s good. Because I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you.”

Without giving herself time to talk herself out of it, Catherine stood and moved around the chair until she was directly in front of Jacob.

This time, when their eyes met, it wasn’t through the mirror.

“I love you.” This time sounded more like it should.

Jacob leaned forward until his forehead rested against hers. “I love you.”

Catherine didn’t have to move far to share their first kiss as a couple who’d made such declarations.

His arms wrapped around her and pulled her close as her hands wound their way through his hair.

Yes.

She’d definitely fallen for the man she married.

And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
