Finally, Greer, who has been doing the rounds of our friends and family, comes to rescue me, holding out her hand in invitation. She’s looking gorgeous in a floaty pink, orange and yellow floral dress that almost skims the floor. I know the bride is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world on her wedding day, but for my money, nobody compares to Greer.

“May I have this dance, Mr Markham?”

“It would be my pleasure, Ms Carter.” I bow slightly as I take her hand and lead her onto the dance floor.

“Aren’t they gorgeous together?” Greer asks as we circle the floor, nodding towards Nick and Lulu, who are forehead to forehead, swaying in time with the band. The way they’re looking at each other requires a fire extinguisher to be handy.

“They are. Just like us.”

Her smile is overflowing with love. “Just like us.”

Maybe we need to borrow that fire extinguisher. Only I don’t think it would work. And who would want it to?
