“Dawson would say so. Instead I fucked up every lap—my timing in the corners was off. Dawson actually said, ‘Son, are you sure you picked the right sport?’”

I giggled. “He wouldn’t.”

“He did. I had to smile and shrug because the only thing I saw while riding was my girlfriend’s ass under that skirt I love, and her breasts in a bra that covers nothing. I got hard in the middle of the lap, imagining what I’ll do to you in twelve days.”

“But who’s counting?”

“Me. Please tell me there weren’t any guys there.”

“Where’s this jealousy from? The racer every girl would drop her panties for is insecure?”

“Yours are the only ones I want dropped. Though I’d rather take them off myself. With my teeth.”

“Can’t wait,” I whispered, gripping the phone.

“Same, peque.”

“And no—no guys. Just Alba.”

He blew out a relieved breath. “Good. Now I can sleep.”

“Or look at the pictures again. At least you’ve got something to stare at.”

His warm chuckle traveled down the line. “You will too. Give me a sec.”

“Okay.”

We hung up.

A minute later, a text popped up. He’d sent a photo: him in his en suite, towel hanging so low it looked like it might slip an inch and show everything. His muscles looked even more carved in the mirror’s fog; wet hair fell over his forehead, and he was smiling. Written on the glass in a finger smear were the wordsTe amo.

Our weekend couldn’t come soon enough.

JULY 10TH

I’ve been cramming for the SATs for a week, and math is finally starting to make sense. Alba high-fived me when I solved a quadratic on the first try. Asher texted that he was proud of me; we’ve been talking every night.

No one but Alba knows. She even offered—without me asking—to tell my father I’d gone to Oakwood Springs with her and her dad if he calls while I’m not at school.

Our relationship is becoming something I’ve never had with Mandy—a friendship without the crack running down the middle of a heart.

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Islid the bookmark back into place and shut the diary. Asher would be here any minute to pick me up for the weekend, and I fought to keep my excitement in check. Only Alba knew who he really was; Teagan thought I was going away with my stepbrother.

“I’ve got something that’ll look beautiful with your top,” Alba said, eyes lifting from the book on her bed. She rummaged through her makeup bag on the nightstand and handed me a pink glittery lip gloss. “It’s new. Keep it.”

I shoved the diary into the drawer and took it. “Thanks.”

After a few coats in front of the full-length mirror on the closet door, I gathered my hair into a sleek ponytail and spritzed myself with watermelon body spray. Asher loved that scent. I twirled in the mirror and smiled.

“So much effort for a brother,” Teagan said.

“Step,” Alba corrected, snapping her book shut. “Maybe she’s doing it for herself—to like how she looks.”

“Not even step,” I said. “Our parents aren’t married.” The conversation annoyed me. I wasn’t his sister at all, but I had to lie so Sarah wouldn’t tell my father a nonrelative was picking me up.
