“It’s you they love, baby. You could never do anything to upset them.” Unless she stopped seeing them. He’d always thought that annual gathering had been so they could reminiscence about Colton with the girl he’d planned on spending forever with. But it’d been more than that. It’d been the only way they knew to keep Piper in their own lives.

She squeezed his fingers. “Are you sure?” She sounded so uncertain. “They’ve been through so much.”

He rested his forehead against hers. To hell with the way the room was filling up with the cream of society. He didn’t know any of them, didn’t care about any of them. All he cared about was taking away every last lingering sense of guilt she’d carried for so long, when none of it was her fault.

“I’m sure. Tell me again that you want to be with me.”

Her breath teased his lips. “I want to be with you. You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted.”

“Forever?”

Her kiss was sweet and chaste. “And beyond.”

Need burned through him and it wasn’t just lust and desire for the way his body craved hers. It was a primitive need to know she was his, to show the world there was only one woman for him, and ever had been.

“Marry me.”

Time stood still as she caught her breath, and it seemed his heart stopped beating for eternity. This isn’t how I planned to ask you. Then she smiled. “Yes.”

He forgot where they were, and who was watching. He cradled her beautiful face and drowned in the blue of her eyes. “Not engaged. I just want to marry you.”

“I don’t want an engagement ring. I only want you.”

He kissed her, and there was nothing sweet or chaste about it. “I’ll buy you diamonds one day. I promise.”

She wound her arms around his neck. “Diamonds are overrated. When we get our first house, you can find me a rescue puppy.”

He laughed and held her close. “You’ve got it, baby.”

The End
