“Fine.” I take a deep breath and hand Evan an envelope and a small box. He opens it and reads the note.
“The Devil has a spawn,” he says aloud. Confused, he opens the box and his eyes widen.
His gaze shifts from the positive test to my face, and I can see the moment realization dawns on him.
For a moment, there's a stunned silence as he processes the information. Time seems to stand still as I wait for his reaction.
Then, a slow smile creeps across his face, and his eyes light up with joy. “Really?” he breathes, his voice conveying both shock and excitement. I nod, unable to contain my own smile any longer. His initial surprise transforms into unbridledhappiness, and he pulls me into a tight hug. Laughter bubbles up from within him.
“I can't believe it,” he exclaims, still holding me close. “This is amazing news, angeloúdi mou.”
He finally pulls back and, as we sit across from each other, sipping our drinks, a playful glint flashes in his eyes.
“So, how long have you known about this little secret?” he asks, raising an eyebrow. I chuckle, appreciating the lightness he's brought to the conversation. I was so nervous about telling him, but I should've known I had no reason to be.
I take a moment, looking down at my cup, and then meet his gaze.
“A few weeks,” I admit sheepishly. “I wanted to be sure before I shared the news with you.” After I took my first pregnancy test, I made an appointment for a blood test with Dr. Joseph. I made him promise not to tell Evander. At first, he hesitated, saying he was under clear orders to tell my overprotective husband if I ever visited him. So, I had to remind him about doctor-patient confidentiality…and I may or may not have threatened him at gunpoint.I am a mob queen now, after all.
Evan gasps dramatically. “A few weeks? You've been keeping this from me forweeks?” His tone is serious, but a mischievous grin betrays his true feelings.
I can't help but laugh at his theatrical response. “I didn’t want to get your hopes up.”
He leans back in his chair, still pretending to be upset. “I can't believe you hid this from me for so long,” he says. “Do you know what that means?”
“No,” I respond, not knowing where he’s going with this.
“What happens when you lie to me, my angel?” he asks, his eyes ablaze with intensity.
My heart immediately accelerates. “I get punished.”
Our eyes lock across the table. The air between us crackles with intensity. I can feel the heat radiating from his stare, an invitation that ignites a primal desire within me.
My husband’s gaze travels down slowly, tracing the contours of my face, lingering on every subtle shift in expression. I reciprocate, savoring the details of his features, the hunger in his eyes echoing my own.
Evan’s pupils dilate, and a playful smirk tugs at the corner of his lips.
“Run.”
