It’s a perfect analogy for my marriage.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

Have you ever looked yourself up online?

A friend once told me I might be terrified at what I’d find.

I’m more than frightened! I’d like a time machine so I can go back to the beginning of the internet and blow it up. Those pictures were not supposed to exist.

“Thank you for agreeing to see me—professionally that is.”I hold out my hand to Carys.

“Of course. Now, tell me why you asked me to run a background investigation on you, Sula.”

“Have you read it yet?” I dodge her question—for the moment.

Her frustration is evident. “No. It just arrived this morning from Hudson Investigations.”

I bob my head. “Then before you open it, may I be terribly rude and text someone quickly?”

Carys’s eyebrows raise. “Certainly.

I open my group chat with my brothers and type,She has the report.

JB:Well, that was bloody quick.

Brendan:You owe me a grand.

JB:Fine.

Me:Can you two possibly focus instead of behaving like little boys?

Brendan:If we must.

Me:Are we in agreement to loop her in?

JB:Yes.

Brendan:Absolutely.

I slip my phone in my bag. “I really do apologize.”

Carys lifts the file before laying it aside. “I suspect there’s a great deal more than I suspect would be the normal background check in here.”

I cross my legs to buy myself a few precious seconds to wipe my mind clear of heartache and to focus on providing Carys nothing but the facts. “Neither Angie nor Ward gave me up, obviously.” It’s a statement, not a question.

“Wait, my brother knows what’s going on?”

“Only since he married Angie.”

Carys’s frustration is evident. “Open the file, Carys. I’m certain there’s likely a top sheet that summarizes everything.”

“It’s like you expected this...” her voice trails off as she scans the top sheet. “You? You’re the bloggerMoore You Want? In addition to holding down one of the most challenging positions at Moore Software Worldwide?”

“Which I no longer do,” I remind her.

“Because you and Joshua Basset had a spat.”
