“It’s another dream come true, Carmen. It may not be worldwide fame or having your songs on the country music charts, but it’s a dream we can experience together.”

She takes my hands and faces me, her eyes showing me what she’s about to say is important. “Even if I still wanted those things, nothing could top this. You make all my dreams come true simply by loving me. I hope I can do the same for you.”

Her head starts to fall with sorrow over lost time, but I redirect her eyes to me by framing her face. “I have everything I’ve ever wanted in my hands, and I’m never letting go. We will sing and kiss when we feel like it, give Sadie plenty of siblings to play with, and fill our lives with love and adventure for the rest of our days. And we’re going to start here tonight.”

I reach into the back cab of the truck and grab the overnight bag I packed for such an occasion. “Let’s go celebrate our way.”

“Love to,” she says, taking my hand. “But can we find a place to hang this first?”

She waves a sprig of mistletoe in the air, making me laugh.

“Where did you get that?”

“I might have had an accomplice steal it from the gazebo for me. A little souvenir from our big day.”

“I’m glad it’s plastic. We can display it and make Sadie uncomfortable with our PDA all year round.”

“I can’t wait. No more mistletoe misses for us.”

“Amen to that.” After unlocking the door, I scoop my arms under her and carry her over the threshold, signaling the start of a forever meant only for a love like ours.
