“We’re having dinner with him and Lilya.”

Right, uh huh, sure.“I thought we weren’t telling people.”
His eyes widened in innocence.“I said nothing.”
“But you’re planning to.”
“Did I say that?”
“You don’t care about double dates.You don’t even care about single dates.You care about getting your hole.”
“First time I’ve heard you complain about it.”
“Then you haven’t been listening,” she said, wriggling out of his arms.“What’s the point in talking about something if you’re just going to do whatever you want anyway?”
He opened his hands at his sides.“I said nothing.”

“Why dinner?”
“Why not?”he asked.“Rox is in New York.Jane is in New York.You’ve gone through all this shit with your mom and I’m not the most sympathetic guy.Lilya’s right there, why not talk about it with friends?”
Who also happened to be two of the most caring people she’d ever met in her whole life.
As much as she didn’t want to, she exhaled in surrender.“Fine.Dinner.We’ll have to settle my mom tonight, so we’ll be in the neighborhood.That means we can meet Leon.”
“For what?”
“The SIT candidates have been twiddling their thumbs all week.”
“They need direction,” Leon piped up.“And need to be observed by all decision makers.Interviews must take place in front of the entire panel.”
“Radley gets a sense for these things.You do your thing, follow the program, make your own decisions, but tell Radley nothing.Don’t report to her.When we’re back, she’ll meet with every team individually and draw her own conclusions.No one will say no to that.”
