She scoffed. “I’m implying that it’s kidnapping when you’re acriminal.”

He eyed her. “You were in a pretty big hurry to get away from those cops back there for being just a concerned citizen.”

Her face blanched again. “That’s not your concern.”

“I think it is. The last thing I need right now are the cops after us.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have jumped into my car against my will.”

“Isavedyou, lady.” His chest stung, and he winced.

She had the decency to look guilty. “Yeah. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” He pulled his hand back to check on his wound. Still bleeding. He pressed it back again, harder this time. What was he thinking? He should have left well enough alone. But even as he cursed himself for getting involved, he knew he couldn’t walk away from a man attacking a woman. He wasn’t like that.

The woman shifted in her seat. “How bad is it?”

“I don’t know. Not too bad. I’ll live.” He hoped.

“How long are you going to force me to drive you?”

“Geez, lady, I’m not forcing anything on you. Just drop me off at the next town. I’ll even pay you. You can be my Uber.”

She snorted. “Your Uber? Are you kidding? You hopped into my car without my—”

“Consent. Right. I know about your non-consensual thing. Sorry. It’s not like I had much of a choice.”

She glared at him. “You could have given yourself up to the cops.”

“And what about you? Why didn’t you want the cops to find you there?”

She pinched her lips together in a tight line.

“That’s what I thought.” He laid his head back on the headrest.

“Well, I didn’t murder anyone.”

Right. Of course, that’s what she thinks. It’s what everyone thought. “Neither did I,” he said under his breath.

After a moment of silence, he motioned to the trash bag of clothes in the back seat. “You moving somewhere?”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “You’re making conversation? With the woman you’re kidnapping?”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake. Never mind. I’ll just shut up.”

“Good.”

He couldn’t wait to get out of the car. “How far is the next town?”

“The actual next town? Ten miles.”

“Okay. Just drop me off there.”

“Bend? You’re going to get out at Bend, population five? What are you going to do? Steal a tractor to make your big getaway? You know those things go, like, fifteen miles per hour tops.”

Cade couldn’t help it. He chuckled at her. “You’re hilarious.”

“Yeah, a real late-night comedian.” She rolled her eyes. “You can’t get out at Bend. They don’t even have a drug store.”
