“Hey, none of that,” Bennett protested.

His uncle chortled his laughter. “I sure could tell you some good ones. I have all the dirt on this kid. You ought to come over some time. We can cook hot dogs in the fire pit I have.”

“That sounds fun,” I said. “I’d really love that.”

“Why would she go to your house when she’s never even been to our place?” Bennett’s dad protested.

“Because our place is a dump,” Bennett said.

“I was going to fry fish this afternoon to celebrate Bennett’s graduation. We got him a cake and everything. Would you like to come over and join us?”

Bennett looked surprised but happy to hear that his dad was making more of an effort to be present.

“I would love to,” I said.

“Just don’t run off when you see how bad it is,” Bennett said.

I looked Bennett in the eyes. “I wouldn’t do that. I love you for you. It doesn’t matter what your house looks like. You don’t need to hide that part of your life from me. It’ll just help me understand where you come from better.”

His eyes shone. “You really are a remarkable girl. I’m lucky to have you.”

“I’m lucky to have you, too.”

Bennett grinned down at me. We had a bright future ahead of us. And I couldn’t wait to spend it with this amazing guy by my side.
