Epilogue

Sariah swept a strand of hair from her eyes as she wiped down the glass on the case displaying the jewelry for her store. It was finally the end of the day, and she was eager to get home and put her feet up for the evening. Maybe sip a cup of hot cocoa. She’d just locked up the store for the night.

She put the spray cleaner and the rag away and went to get her purse so she could head home. A tapping noise sounded on the glass of the front door. Sariah came out from her office to see Mrs. Wheaton standing at the sign that said they were closed.

“Yoo-hoo! Is anyone in there?”

Sariah let out an exhausted sigh and walked to let her in. “Hello, Mrs. Wheaton. What can I do for you today?”

“Oh! Thank you so much for letting me stop by after you’ve already closed. I feel so bad, but my anniversary is tomorrow, and I would like to get my ring cleaned to take some pictures with Walter. Do you think you could be a dear and clean it for me?”

Sarah grit her teeth and smiled. “Of course I can.”

“Aren’t you the sweetest? I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this.”

“It’s really no problem.” Except for the fact that she was exhausted, and her feet were killing her.

Sariah went to get the cleaning solution.

“I just heard the most interesting thing when I was on my way over here. I stopped by Josie’s Coffee Shop, and I saw Doris Blevins. She told me that Maple Creek is about to have one of their own newly available as the town’s most eligible bachelor.”

Sariah didn’t like to gossip, but she never seemed to be able to avoid it when Mrs. Wheaton was around. Somehow, the older woman always sucked her into her meddling conversations.

“You’ll never believe who it was.”

Sariah could tell Mrs. Wheaton was trying to get her to guess. “I’m sure it’s not any of my business.”

“I figured you would want to be the first to know since he was an old flame of yours.”

“Kane?” Sariah couldn’t believe it. He’d been married for so long that she assumed he’d be sucked into the family life. Not becoming an eligible bachelor. She was sorry to hear that his marriage had failed.

“Yes! Yes! Kane Leland! Did you know that he’s a billionaire now? Who would have thought our own little Kane would become so successful?”

Sariah wasn’t surprised that Kane had done so well. He’d been groomed for it from birth. He’d ended up taking over his grandfather’s company. But a billion dollars was an unfathomable amount of money.

“I heard his divorce has been a nasty one. He might need some cheering up.”

“That’s too bad,” Sariah said.

“Don’t you see what I’m saying?” Mrs. Wheaton said. “This is a perfect opportunity for you to rekindle what you once had with him.”

Sariah didn’t want to discuss her past with Kane with Mrs. Wheaton. But there was a reason she and Kane had broken up. If they hadn’t worked out then, they wouldn’t work out now.

Sariah was happy being single. She had a steady job and owned her home. She had no plans to change anything in her life. She was sorry that Kane was going through a hard time, but it had nothing to do with her. She knew the last thing he would want was to hear from her. It was bad enough that she’d had to see so much of him at Tessa and Benson’s wedding. Speaking to him again would only bring up past hurts that were better left alone.
