“I guess I am. Yeah.”

“That’s gonna be a bit difficult considering you’re a dead serial killer…”

“Difficult, but not impossible. We’d have to be careful, but when the monster’s satisfied, and you’ve got some time off. We could try to do something normal couples do. Dinner, a movie. A holiday by the sea. Anything away from here, just for a little while.”

“And you’d like that.”

“I’d like it with you. No detective. No monster. Me and you.”

“That sounds … nice.”

Chad’s smile met Romeo’s smile in a kiss, and they both snorted before turning the kiss into a more serious lock of lips and tongues. Chad ran his fingers through Romeo’s thick hair, and Romeo tightened his hold around Chad, walking him backwards towards the house.

A chortling started above them, the distinctive call of magpies, and Romeo pulled his mouth from Chad’s, ending the kiss.

“Did you really just stop because of the birds?”

Romeo didn’t answer, but squeezed Chad tight. Chad pressed his forehead on Romeo’s collarbone, refusing to look at them circling above. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before sinking further into Romeo’s hold.

“That’s interesting.”

“What is it?” Chad mumbled into his chest.

“There’s four of them.”
