“Trying,” Micah said through gritted teeth.
There was a tan sedan behind them, and they were on a narrow two-lane road—with no guardrails, and a steep fall into the ocean.
“Fuck,” he said.
The tan sedan rammed into them again.
“Hold tight,” Micah told them, hitting the gas so they flew forward. Luke recognized cars weren’t supposed to go that fast but was grateful that Marcus had footed the bill for a fancy ass car with crazy horsepower.
“Who is it? Chris?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart,” Luke told her. He exchanged a look with Conor.
Conor reached underneath the seat and handed him a gun, taking one for himself, too. Micah rolled the windows down, Luke released the safety, and fired off a series of shots at the car behind them, focusing on the tires. One blew, and then the other—Conor’s work. Luke watched as the car spun out.
“Oh shit,” Kara said, laughing. “My heart is racing. Did we get them?”
“We did, giddy girl,” Conor told her, also smiling.
“I know it’s wrong for me to feel this way, but I hope those fuckers lose some limbs or something. I hope it fucking hurts. I hope they—”
Something slammed into them from behind.
Gun shots rang out.
“Fuck!” Micah cursed as he tried to regain control of the car so they didn’t fall straight into the ocean, but it was too late. They careened around the curve—and straight off the cliff.
For a moment, everything slowed down. And they were wrong: your life didn’t pass before your eyes, only the important moments.
The look in Conor’s eyes when they first shook hands on the first day of BUDS.
The way Micah had tasted when he first kissed him in secret.
Curled up in bed with the two of them between missions. Never talking about what they were to each other, just being it.
On the climbing wall with Kara, when she smiled at him for the first time.
And finding her in the cabin he’d helped build for her with his hands, knowing that he was stealing a second chance with her, but doing it anyway.
The feeling of her pressed between the three of them, all of them joined, love turning fucking into something more.
I love you, he maybe said. He didn’t know for sure. Time had sped up and the water was getting closer.
Then it slammed into them and they were sinking. It was almost funny—he’d thought the Pacific Ocean held his future, he’d just thought it was symbolic.
The last thing he heard was Kara’s terrified scream.
To be continued…
