He bursts into laughter but gets up and grabs a towel.

I’m pouting while he wipes me dry, but finally, I give in to his joyful humor and crack a smile.

“Okay, go pee,” he says with a smack on my ass, “I’ll ask for a new bath, okay?”

I nod and go pee, finally.

Oh, what a relief.

When I’m done, Cain is standing in his joggers just outside the door—waiting for me with a robe. I pull it on quickly and wait until the servants fill the bathtub with new water.

“We can drive after lunch.”

“Where?” I ask, confused, looking at my husband.

Date? No, he said yesterday that we have to postpone it.

“To your brother’s. I don’t know when his birthday is, but apparently, the whole thing will last a few days and he expects us today.”

That does sound like him! My eyes widened in excitement. I already knew we were invited, and according to my makeshift period calendar, Greg’s birthday should be on Tuesday. Or Wednesday. But I didn’t want to hope we’d go there so soon and for more than a few hours!

Servants leave our bedroom, and I go to the bathtub with a squeak.

Cain follows me. I’m about to protest his cleaning fetish, when he just throws me a washcloth and goes to his wardrobe.

“We need to pack lightly, we’ll go on a bike,” he says, taking out some weird duffel bag.

“Okay, no problem,” I’m not going to complain when he’s about to take me to my family, my land, my kingdom.

I scrub myself clean pretty quickly and put on a robe again. Excited to pack.

“Do you want to go for a run?” Cain asks, putting something dark and big in the duffel bag.

I’ve not let my wolf out in ages, I would love to run.

“With you?” I squint my eyes at him.

“Mm-hmm.” He leaves the bag in the middle of the bed and comes to my side.

“No, thank you,” I answer while he’s pulling me to his chest and kissing my head.

He chuckles, probably realizing why I refused.

“You can chase me this time,” he proposes, looking at me with a glint in his eye.

I think about his ridiculous proposition. Never in my life have I heard any Alpha inviting anyone to challenge them.

“You are an Alpha, you cannot… oh. You are sure there is no way I will be able to catch you, got it.”

“So, will you go with me?” He leans down and kisses me on the lips. I can’t exactly answer when he’s devouring my mouth like that, so I just nod.

I run through the forest as fast as my alpha-blooded werewolf form can go—my paws barely touching the ground, fur sticking back to my body, and nose low; because smell is the only thing I can count on at this point.

Cain is long gone, not giving me any real chance of catching him. He’s good. Too good. But I can still try to track him down, hunt him.

Suddenly, I catch the very subtle lemon scent as he stops in place, or maybe… I catch another werewolf scent, or… dirty dog, maybe. And blood. Lots and lots of blood.

I speed up, already at the limit of my abilities, but I don’t care if I outdo myself. I need to find Cain quickly, something in this forest is not right and I’m not too proud to acknowledge that—usually it’s better to not play the lonely hero.
