“Yes. I could be traveling the world.”

He snorted, but I knew he found her amusing. Mostly.

“I’ve seen you two fly. I could easily fit behind Kelsey.”

“You are not riding me.”

This time I snorted.

“He always makes it sound so dirty,” she complained.

We entered the room in question, and I waved at Eugene.

Vedar’s fingers gently circled my wrist mid-greeting, and he tugged my fingers to his lips.

“No,” he said softly.

I rolled my eyes.

“I’m here to socialize.”

“With other females.”

“You promised you would help make this a comfortable experience. Overbearing isn’t comfortable.”

He flashed his teeth at me in annoyance, and I grinned since that usually meant I was going to get my way.

“Thank you, Vedar.”

I went to one of the desks and pulled the tablet from my bag.

“Is it okay if I talk to you to give instruction?” Eugene asked with his gaze cautiously on the floor.

“Absolutely,” I said. “That’s why we’re here. Vedar, this is Eugene, the human who is going to help us acclimate to the school. Eugene, this is Vedar, my dragon.”

“Don’t worry,” Zoe said. “You’ll be fine as long as you don’t try to pet him. He bites.”

Vedar’s face went from appropriately stoic to severely offended in a heartbeat, and Zoe laughed her ass off.

Vedar’s gaze narrowed on her, and if I wouldn’t have been studying him so closely, I might have missed the hint of a smile that tugged at his lips before he focused on me.

“Your sister is deplorable.”

“Only sometimes,” I said diplomatically.

“How long must she live with us?”

It was his typical question whenever she annoyed him. But she and I both knew he didn’t mean it. At least, not completely.

“Well, maybe in a few years, Zoe can find a dragon of her own.”

He breathed in deeply, studying my sister far too closely for a moment.

“It’s possible. She’s starting to smell like treasure.”
