Rather than get upset with him for implying we might be better off letting people face their fate, I thought about why he implied such a thing. The first conclusion worried me. “Do you think it might be a trap?”
“I think it’s a possibility, yes. It’s one that has been used before, and many a good vampire hunter is dead now because of such traps. For as long as there have been vampires, there have been vampires willing to prey on the innocent to draw out hunters. It is a relentless cycle. The hunter becomes the hunted, then the hunted once again becomes the hunter. We do not know if that is the case here, and that makes this situation quite dangerous. But we cannot simply ignore it, and we know that. And if it is a trap, so do they. Which of us is the smarter opponent? That is what will determine who wins and who dies.”
“Victory or death is not a phrase I want associated with my life, Kennwick,” I complained.
“It is our reality, I’m afraid. Worse, if we do not act, we will be forced to sit and wonder how many will die as a result.”
“Or wonder how many more might not have died if only we acted sooner,” I muttered.
“Precisely so. Tonight, we gather information. Tomorrow, we hunt.”
