Kayla pressed her head into Aurora’s leg again and that was when she realized the cat’s giant head was covering up the blade Aurora had strapped to her thigh. It was just the two of them. Everyone else had fallen back to fight.

“Fine, the cat and I will fall back. There’s no need to hurt the girl.” Aurora tossed Treachery to the side as she reached down with her other hand as if to grab the cat by the neck. Instead, she gripped the handle of her dagger. The one thing she still had at her disposal was vampire speed. Without hesitating, she pulled the dagger free, with fluid motion and a flick of her wrist, she sent the blade sailing. Thankfully, the female was much shorter than the pig who held her hostage. The blade hit its mark dead center.

The girl screamed as her captor crumbled to the floor, Aurora’s dagger protruding from between his eyes. Aurora grabbed Treachery from the ground, then strode to where her enemy lay. Placing a booted foot on his chest, she leaned down and pulled her blade free from his skull, then wiped the blood on his shirt.

“Disgusting pig. Death suits you much better.”

“My mate is one bad-ass vampire. God, I love you.”

She looked at Wolfe, who held pride in his eyes. “We need to get you guys free.”

“Here, I found the key.” The girl pulled a silver key from her bra and offered it to Aurora.

With no time to waste, she went to Wolfe first and freed his bindings. Once that was done, she rushed to Noah and had to work a little harder to free him.

“Are you going to introduce me to your jaguar?” Wolfe asked, and Aurora followed his gaze to see Kayla standing sentry at the doorway.

“That is Kayla, Ryder’s mate. She’s now a shifter, apparently.”

“Ryder? You found them?”

She shook her head. “Lilith did. It was them who came with Xavier to save Luna and I, who, by the way, is doing good.” Finally, she had Noah free and maybe they could finally get the hell out of here.

As they were making their way to the door, Ryder stepped into view. “The enemy has been neutralized. Wolfe, fuck, it’s good to see you.” He stepped forward and gave Wolfe a quick embrace. “The women here have been offered sanctuary with us, which they have accepted, and their mad scientist is now in our custody, along with his serum.”

“Thank god.”

Kayla was now back to her normal self and stood next to her mate. “I have a portal open to home and evacuation has begun.”

“Friends, shall I introduce you to your new home?” Ryder looked at Wolfe, Aurora, and Noah.

“I’m ready. I’ve had enough of this part of the country,” Wolfe replied, but then he looked at Heather.

“I know I vowed to avenge you, but it seems my mate took care of that. You will come with us as well?”

“I am happy to have witnessed his death. There is nothing to keep me here. If you promise my safety, then I will go.”

“Not only do I promise your safety, but there are several others who will as well.”

She nodded. “Then let’s go.”

They had only beenin Kentucky a month, but it already felt like home. Wolfe had been amazed at what his friends had done. The small community that had been named Independence was a work in progress.

The farmland to the south was already green with crops and some were ready for harvest. The river was full of fish and the forest was rich with wildlife. He hadn’t eaten this well in a long time.

“What are you thinking?” Aurora sat beside him on the porch swing.

He took her hand and looked at her. “Did we really do it? All the primordials are here. We have everyone from LA and the survivors each primordial had with them are here as well.”

She smiled. “I would say you guys succeeded. I mean, look at this place. Compared to where we were, it’s heaven. We have an actual home.”

His mate was right about the home. With the help of other vampires, they had built a modest four-room cottage by the river. It was peaceful, and Wolfe felt like he needed to pinch himself. “I feel like something is going to go wrong. Everything is too perfect at the moment.”

“Don’t jinx it.” She kissed him and he was just contemplating picking her up and carrying her into the house when he heard someone approach. It was Xavier.

“Luna is in labor.”
