Noah opened his eyes enough to give her a slight nod before closing them again and taking a deep breath. It was clear the vampire was trying to meditate. Hopefully, it would buy him time. Wolfe put his focus back on the female.
“Do they force you to do this every time they bring someone in?”
She nodded again.
“Are you the only female here?”
“No, there are at least ten others. I am the youngest.”
“I bet that the word no doesn’t mean shit to those men, does it?”
She bit her lip again, and there was no missing the tremble in her body. “We are nothing more than sex slaves to them. If we behave, we get fed.”
Anger rose to the back of his throat until it burned, and he was forced to swallow it down. “Have you ever met a vampire?”
“Yes, they had one in this same room about a month ago. He was like a wild animal.”
Noah opened his eyes. “Rogue no doubt.”
“That would be my guess. Heather, there are vampires and then there are rogues, which is what you had in here. A vampire does not act like an animal unless the situation calls for it. Did you know the vampires were created to help humankind survive the Red Death?”
“I had heard whispers of that, but Danny forbids anyone to speak such nonsense.”
Danny must be Greaseball. Figures he wouldn’t want anyone to know the truth because being armed with knowledge gave them power and he wanted all of that for himself. “You realize Danny aims to be a dictator?”
“I have nowhere else to go. Besides, he would never let me leave.” The look of utter defeat in her eyes brought forth that anger again.
“Listen to me, Heather. Those are not rumors about the vampires helping humanity. I am one of them, and I will help you if you can get us free.” He just took a tremendous gamble on this female and the fact her freedom was worth more to her than her turning him in to the men who did nothing but abuse her.
CHAPTERNINETEEN
Aurora had searchedevery crack and crevice of the abandoned station, including outside, but had zero luck locating even a drop of water. Luna was curled up against the block wall to stay cool, but it was now midday, and the heat was becoming unbearable. She didn’t have to be a medical professional to know that Luna and the baby were in real danger. If help didn’t arrive soon, she feared the worst. Taking a leap of faith, she stepped outside.
“Damn it, Lilith, where the hell are you? You vowed to go wherever I did. It’s not about me, but Luna and that baby are innocent!” she whispered into the thick, stale air. Where had her friend gone? Lilith had left only uttering something about having a very important task that needed tending to. When the air didn’t move and no reply came to her question, she turned to head back inside. Just as her fingers touched the hot metal of the door handle, the air behind her popped as if it had been ripped open. She spun, ready to fight whatever threat lurked there, only to get the shock of her life.
A vortex of white and blue light spun, and she swallowed down bile. Had the rogue found them? She prepared herself to fight to the death when a female with chin-length strawberry hair layered with pink streaks and silver eyes stepped into view.
“Oh, thank god we found you,” she said as a tall male with eyes that surveyed every inch of space around them stepped beside the female. He was clearly a vampire and for a moment, Aurora relaxed her shoulders.
Two more men filed out, and one of them was Xavier. She jumped into action.
“Luna is inside. You need to hurry.” She flung open the door and yelled, “Luna! Help is here!”
Before she could even utter another word, two men surged past her and into the building as Xavier pulled her aside.
“They will get her to the help she needs.” He handed her a flask of what she assumed was water. She unscrewed the cap and drank down the cool wetness. “Damn, that tastes so good.” She watched as one man carried Luna outside and toward the vortex.
“How did you get a portal here?” She’d hardly finished her question when Lilith stepped into view, her red lips curled into a smile.
“I told you I had a task to tend to. I found the compound in Kentucky.”
Her jaw dropped. “What?”
The female with the pink streaked hair stepped closer. “I’m Kayla and this is my mate, Ryder.” She waved to the tall vampire, who seemed to hover over her as if ready to slaughter any danger that might harm the female.
“Wolfe has mentioned both of you.” Panic froze the blood in her veins. “He and Noah have been taken. I don’t know what the men who took them used, but when they were cuffed, both vampires lost their power and I no longer have mine.” She looked at Lilith. “I couldn’t help them.”
“That should not be possible. Are you able to communicate with him?”
