Seconds later, Xavier was still as stone and Wolfe waved his hand in front of the vampire’s face. “He’s still breathing, but it’s like he’s become a statue.”
“I don’t really understand it, but Lilith is the one who explained what was happening when one day I froze a demon who was trying to attack me.”
“How did you know what to do? I mean, are you saying it suddenly happened?”
“Yes. I was a newbie vampire at the time and had accidentally walked into a higher-level demon’s territory. He tried to attack me, and I guess I panicked and suddenly he was frozen like a giant, red, puss-filled popsicle. Lilith said I had a special gift and helped me hone my skills.”
“That’s a rather disgusting picture you painted there, but I get the point. Can you unfreeze our friend here?”
“Of course.”
The magic seemed to be sucked from the room and moved toward Aurora until he no longer felt it prickle and Xavier blinked.
“Are you gonna freeze me?”
“My friend, you have already been there and back. How do you feel?”
Xavier opened his mouth to reply but was cut off by shouts Wolfe never wanted to hear.
“Rouge vampires!”
CHAPTERTHIRTEEN
The shoutsof rogue vampires were followed by blood-curdling screams, and Aurora could only imagine why. She had dealt with the rogue only one time, and it had been a battle she had hoped not to have to repeat. The city had been quiet for a long time, and she should have known it wouldn’t last. Had the fact there was a hotel full of a few hundred people been what drew them back here? No one knew much about these rogues other than they were blood-thirsty demonic vampires who killed without remorse.
“Luna! I need to make sure she is protected,” Wolfe shouted.
“I got this.” It was difficult to believe she was about to protect the woman who had taken the man she loved from her. Rather than stop to dwell on it, she sprang into action. Running for where she knew Luna had been the last time she saw her, which was back across the street in the hotel dining room. Xavier and Wolfe were a blur beside her as they sped past to assist where they could.
When she reached the street, she stopped for a second to take in the scene in front of her. Vampires and mortals brandished blades, throwing stars and guns, fighting for their lives. Blood already darkened the pavement, but she couldn’t be certain who it belonged to.
Aurora! Find Luna and protect her and the baby. Call for me if you need help and for the love of my soul, stay alive.
Wolfe had slipped into her mind and issued the command. It still freaked her out that he could do that, but she had grown accustomed to being able to communicate with those vampires he had sired. Times like this one would prove the ability to be handy.
I got this. You just watch your own back.
The thought of him dying sent a knot to her stomach. If honesty was her friend, she would freely admit it was better for him to be alive and with another than a corpse on the cold street of this dead city. She shook all thoughts of either of them perishing and focused on the task at hand which was locating Luna. Taking off on a run again, she jerked the blade that was strapped to her thigh free from its sheath and headed inside the hotel.
“Luna?” she shouted at a vampire who was headed outside.
“Last I saw her, she was heading to her room.”
She tore off toward the stairs and, taking two at a time, headed to the second floor. When she reached the door, she shoved it open to be greeted by a female’s scream. Her focus was now on Luna, who was midway down the hall and being pulled toward a portal by a rogue vampire.
“I don’t fucking think so!” She unleashed a blast of power so fast it impressed even her and froze both the rogue and his portal as she ran to Luna. “Are you injured?”
Luna shook her head, but Aurora noticed a trickle of blood on the girl’s neck.
“He bit you?”
Luna reached for her neck. “He tried, but I kneed his junk.”
She smiled. “Good girl. Now, let’s go before I have to release my hold on him.”
“Where’s Wolfe?” Luna accepted Aurora’s outstretched hand.
