She shrugged. “No. It means loyalty and strength.”
Apparently, this woman standing in front of her was missing, or simply ignoring, the fact that the vampire who had been chosen as their guardian was called Wolfe. He also had a tattoo of a wolf and was the man who Aurora had been involved with before he had sired her. Add to the fact both he and Aurora had mating marks. Luna didn’t think any of this was a coincidence.
CHAPTERFOURTEEN
Aurora knewwhere Luna was going, but she wasn’t about to board that train because it was only headed for derailment. It was easier to ignore her words and concentrate on getting the girl out of this room before the rogue came back in force. Not to mention the fact there was this nagging feeling something was wrong. She swore she had felt Wolfe’s presence touch her recently, but he hadn’t spoken to her.
Wolfe? Are you okay out there? I’m planning on bringing Luna out of my room. She waited for a reply and when she was about to reach out again, his response was guttural.
Xavier is in serious trouble.
Panic crawled up her spine and sat on her shoulders. She had grown fond of Xavier, and he had become like a brother to her. Aurora reached for him and all she felt was gut wrenching pain. Instinct kicked in and threw her into auto-pilot mode. She turned to Luna.
“Xavier is in trouble. We have to head out now!” To Luna’s credit, she was already heading for the door.
“I can handle whatever is out there.” When she was next to Aurora, she shoved Treachery at her.
“You better take this. You lead, I’ll follow.”
She took her trusted knife and nodded. “Stick close.” Then she shoved the door open the rest of the way and charged into the hallway. Stepping over a body, she called behind her. “If one of them wakens, scream and I’ll take their head. Otherwise, their decapitation will have to wait.” She still experienced the effects of Xavier’s pain and was not stopping until she was certain he was safe. Whatever was happening to him had to be awful to cause such a big bad-ass vampire to suffer so.
When they had made it to the end of the hall, she shoved her senses outward and detected nothing on the other side of the door but cracked it to take a peek. “Clear here. We need to hurry down these stairs, but please be careful.”
“Just go! I’ll be fine and don’t worry, if anything happens, I’ll scream my bloody head off.”
She wasted no time in descending the stairs while keeping her senses open for trouble. Luna was a trooper and managed to keep up, even though when they reached the second floor, she was a little winded.
“Do you need a break?” She felt terrible pushing a pregnant woman, but lives were on the line.
“I’ve got this. Just keep going.” She waved Aurora on so down the next set of stairs they went until the finally reached the lobby. It was then she sensed the fight before her gaze landed on them. Xavier was full on in the sun, surrounded by several rogues and a couple of demons, while Wolfe fought his way to his friend. She turned to Luna, who was now beside her.
“Hold this for me, would you?” She shoved Treachery at her and thankfully, Luna didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the blade as if it were her own.
Wasting no more time, she summoned her power and launched it forward. This time, she wasn’t selective about who she hit. She froze them all and held at least eight beings in a time freeze. Shoving out her hand, she spoke, “I’ll take that blade now.”
She felt the handle slap her palm and wrapped her fingers around the warm bone. “You might not want to watch this.”
“Are… Are they okay?”
“Yep. Just a little trick of mine.” She strode forward until she reached where Wolfe had been fighting with at least three demons. With a flick of her wrist, one head rolled, then two and three. She placed her palm on Wolfe’s chest and tried not to notice the warmth of him under her fingers. She flared out her power again and released him from her hold. He blinked.
“What the hell?” He looked around and quickly realized what she had done. With a smile, he spoke. “Let’s finish this.”
They both headed to Xavier where they made quick work of dispatching the rest of the demons and rogue. Once that was done, Aurora released her new friend from her grip. Xavier came back, a scream on his lips as he jumped free of the sun.
“Motherfucker, that hurts!”
“You need to stop trying to tan.” Wolfe’s joke told Aurora he was at his limit. He had always resorted to humor when he needed an outlet for his emotions.
“Fuck off,” Xavier shot back, his skin already healing. “I was beginning to think I was going to become actual toast.” He looked at Aurora. “You are the best thing to come along since this damn plague started. Thanks for the save.”
“You are most welcome. I have started to like you so becoming toast was not an option.” She looked around. “This place is a damn mess. I wonder how the other floors fared?”
“I knew it was only a matter of time before they came.” Luna had slipped in beside them as she rubbed her back.
“We need to get you away from all of this carnage where you can rest.” Wolfe slipped his arm around Luna’s waist, and Aurora chewed her lip at the sight.
“I can take her back to her room if it’s clear while you guys clean up.” She propped Treachery on her shoulder. “Though I’m not sure how the hell you are going to get rid of all this blood.”
