She sat on the bed, her knees too weak to keep her on her feet. “I understand. It was pretty much the same for me. I don’t even know how many I killed.”
He moved toward her, lowered to his haunches, and stared into her eyes. “I don’t remember coming to you. It must have been instinct.”
“You were a little different, but I thought you were just preoccupied with the mission. I thought things had gone south for you guys and you were just trying to deal. I… I was the one who seduced you. Everything was pretty normal until I orgasmed and then you bit me. I was shocked at first, then I came so fucking hard.”
Recalling that moment sent a flood of moisture to her sex. She and Michael had always been good together and she would bet the farm––if she had one––they would be fucking outstanding now. “I must have passed out because when I woke, it was much like you. So thirsty, and you were nowhere to be found.”
She shrugged. “The rest of my story is pretty much the same, except Lilith found me, brought me to her place, and nursed me back from the brink of madness. She taught me everything I needed to survive.”
“It was you I sensed in the park. You and her, together.” He curled his lip as if pissed she had been with someone.
“Yes. Her blood is like jet fuel and well, my libido has been in hyper-drive since you turned me, so each time I drink I want to fuck.” She arched a brow. “Got a problem with that?”
“I understand, and you will gain control in time.” He shook his head. “Fuck it all to hell.” He swooped in and claimed her mouth. Pushed her to her back and pressed himself between her thighs. He was hard. All male and just as she remembered him. His tongue swept in and claimed every inch of her mouth.
She moaned into him.
Her mind swirled with visions of him shredding her clothing and fucking her until she couldn’t recall her name. She dug her fingers into his hair and kissed him back with the same ferocity he meted out. She ground into his erection, which only turned the blood in her veins into liquid fire. It was when he brushed his thumb across her nipple the mark on her wrist burned and shattered the moment. She pushed at his chest and turned her face away from him.
“We can’t do this, Michael. You have a baby on the way. You belong to Luna.”
“You’re right.” He pushed to his feet and helped her back to sitting. “I swear it will never happen again.”
She didn’t think her heart could break anymore, but it did. Even though she knew he no longer belonged to her, that reality didn’t stop her from loving him. Time, distance, and the fact he had turned her into a vampire hadn’t cooled her feelings one bit.
“There is one thing.” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a ring and shoved it at her. “This was to be your engagement ring. Take it.”
Even though she knew it was wrong, she still reached for it. The diamond was the most stunning thing she had ever seen. It had to be at least two carats with a rising rope of smaller diamonds on either side.
“I can’t take this.” She shoved it back at him.
He stepped back. “It was made special for you. It may no longer be a ring to bind us in marriage but consider it a gift from me. The ring will have value in this world should you ever need it.”
“Then I accept. Thank you, Michael.”
He turned and was gone, and she was left feeling like he had just walked out of her life. Again.
CHAPTERTWELVE
It had beena little more than a week since Aurora had made her new home at the hotel where all the others were staying. She had jumped right in and taken an assignment to help guard the area. After all, she was a vampire and had already been living and fighting on her own for the past year.
Everyone seemed to accept her, and Xavier, who was Wolfe’s right-hand vampire, had brought her into the fold with the others. Of course, the males were both a little infatuated and amazed to have a fellow vampire who was a female among them. Xavier tested her blade skills and commended her on her pinpoint accuracy. He also taught her all the skills required to handle a firearm, except for shooting it. With the limited ammo they had, he could only afford to allow her two bullets for practice. Of course, she had been an excellent student and passed with flying colors.
“Aurora, you excel at everything you do. Lilith did a good job of teaching you to become a vampire,” he said as they stood on the roof of the hotel and looked out over the mostly abandoned city.
“Thanks. She really is a good friend.” She had grown to like Xavier and even Lilith had made a comment about the man’s moral character. So she trusted him.
“Do any of you have special skills?”
“What do you mean by special? I mean, of course, we have excellent hearing, eyesight and smell. We can outrun any human and have superior strength.”
She bit her lip. “I mean something beyond that.”
“What talent do you have, Aurora?”
She faced him to find his intense stare studying her. “Apparently, I can freeze time.”
His brows jacked up. “Come again.”
