Zander nodded. “I need to talk to the doctor.” He looked at his female, who narrowed her gaze on him.
“So, I’m back to being the doctor again?”
“I do have a problem only you can fix.”
Her eyes widened. “You’re hurt?”
He grinned. “Not exactly.”
Her gaze narrowed again, but then she must have realized what he was referring to because her cheeks turned bright pink.
“Our cue to exit, my love.” Greydon offered his mate his hand, and they practically ran from them.
Now that they were alone in the gardens, Zander wasn’t sure where to start. He needed to explain everything to her and then give her the chance to decide for herself what to do. Then there was the part of him that wanted to lay her on the grass and take her. This damn female consumed his every thought. His every breath.
“So, you had something to tell me?”
“Yes, we better sit for this.” He pulled her to a nearby bench, and she quickly took a seat. It surprised him when she patted the spot next to her.
“Sit beside me.” She looked up at him and smiled. “I feel safer when you’re close.”
* * *
She hardly realizedwhat she’d been thinking until the words escaped her. It was true, though. She felt safer when he was around. She had even felt safe when he’d kidnapped her right out from under Zolar. It hadn’t occurred to her at the time, but when she thought back on it, she had always known he would never harm her. When she was in trouble, it was Zander who came to her rescue while Jeff stood by, completely frozen in fear. It might be easy to understand, but she had faced far worse in the past couple of years and had shown more backbone than the man who should have at least made some kind of attempt.
“Thank you again for coming to my rescue.”
He shook his head. “You still don’t get it. I meant it when I said I will always come for you.”
“Because you think I am Lomara.”
“No. Even if the scrolls are right, you are still Sheila who is trying to figure out how she fits into my world. What I do know is you are mine. You always have been, and I believe always will be. It is why your soul has been searching for mine.”
His words seemed like the talk of a lunatic, yet everything about him felt right. “Is this what you wanted to tell me?”
“That and the fact Greydon found the answer to how we unlock your memories and powers.”
She let out a small squeal. “Really?”
“Yes, but I think I may need to back up the story a bit. You heard me speak of the fact Aimee will be the one to take out Zolar?”
She nodded.
“Well, Uuna has left seven artifacts, one of which I collected at the ruins. Each one holds a unique power that grants the wearer its magic. The one I collected is called a fire crystal and grants Aimee the power of fire.”
“Yes, I recall you telling me that.” If she had that kind of power, she could have burned Zolar’s ass.
“Greydon showed me a scroll they found that spoke of three more artifacts, but they are not what we expected. As you might imagine, we assumed these would all be some kind of trinket, but as it turns out, that’s not the case.” He held out his hand and summoned a parchment, which he unrolled and read. “The queen shall have the power of three. Her protector, and the two princesses. Each represents a point of Uuna’s trident and will share their power with the queen. When the time comes and the rest of the artifacts have been collected, four females of power will go forth and slay the god.”
“Her protector is Bethany, right?”
He nodded. “Correct.”
“So now she doesn’t have to fight the god alone.”
“Also correct. But what’s important is between this scroll and the ruins, I have been able to piece together you and Lomara. When Fang and I went back, we found more of the message under centuries of dirt. When Lomara completes the bond with her mate, she will regain her power and her memories.”
“You expect me to mate with you? That’s a big ask.” Then why did the thought of it send a tingle across her skin?
