He tipped his head, but it did nothing to hide his grin, which if Zander didn’t know better, he would think Fang was up to no good.

“As you wish.” Fang opened the portal and stepped through, as was customary. Had Zander tried to precede the Daldara, a protector of the crown, he would likely have tried to kick Zander’s ass, or at the very least given him a good dressing down. He’d had one of Fang’s lectures and would almost prefer an ass beating.

They came out the other side, just a few miles short of the ruins as a precautionary measure. He used his senses to scan the area as he knew Fang did and they both came up with nothing more than the local wildlife.

“I say we portal in and not waste time.”

Fang laughed. “You have it bad for her. Do you really think she is Lomara?”

“I don’t think it. I know she is.”

“Then why are we here?”

“I want to see if I missed anything. Something that might tell us how to unlock her magic and her memories.” Before he could open a portal, Fang touched his shoulder.

“You should know that Orien intends to pursue her.”

“Fuck him. He doesn’t really want her, he just wishes to take her away from me.”

“The way I see it, she belongs to herself, and the choice should be her own.”

Zander shot Fang a glare worthy of one that would start a war between nations. “Funny words coming from you, who left a trail of blood while you searched for your mate.” Greydon had retold the destruction Fang had left behind while searching for Bethany.

“I’ll have you know that Bethany and I consummated our relationship right away.” He sniffed the air. “You two have not fucked yet.”

“Like that makes a difference. Now, stop chattering like a female and let’s go.”

“As you wish.” Fang waved his hand and summoned a portal, and like before, he went first to make certain it was clear. Zander hated the extra time wasted on such formalities, but he understood the need. He might be last in line for the throne, but it was not a position to take lightly. Once Fang sent him a mental message it was safe, he stepped in.

“This way.” He led Fang, who was now sporting several throwing stars, at least two daggers, and a pistol, that was no doubt loaded with the special bullets meant to kill a demon, strapped to his thigh.

“I see you summoned your weapons.”

“Of course. Did you expect otherwise?” The Daldara now seemed offended.

“I expected nothing less. You are a protector, after all.”

“And one who should have left your ass back home. I must have taken leave of my senses.”

“I am actually surprised you agreed to come with me and not stay at Greydon’s side.” Fang was the king’s protector, and his priority was always the king.

“I left Bethany and Father there. They will make certain the king and queen are safe. Besides, I wanted to see this etching with my own eyes and tell you I found the doctor’s male.”

Zander stopped both because they were at the site and from Fang’s words. “What do you mean, her male?”

“The queen asked me to locate the doctor’s male and see what he was up to, so I did.”

He now faced Fang rather than looking at the etching on the wall. Pissed, his focus was pulled from his mission. “And?”

“The male she was to wed has moved on yet, he still searches for her and hopes she is alive somewhere. The queen will give her this information today.”

The panic started in his gut then raced to his lungs, which constricted before it landed in his throat as one hard-to-swallow lump.

“I can see that does not please you.”

“Of course, it does not please me. Having my brother pursuing her is bad enough, but does her human male still seek to have her?” He had no more words, so he turned to concentrate on the markings on the wall. Fang slid in next to him and also studied the etchings.

“If you and she are meant to be, she will choose you.”
