Lines on his forehead deepened. “Yes. Something about it wasn’t human, you said. Does that have something to do with your kidnapping?”

She nodded. “Very much so. A powerful man was looking for it and when he found me, he also discovered the file in my office that held the same DNA, but this was more recent. It belonged to a female.”

He shook his head. “I’m not following. What did this DNA belong to if it wasn’t human?”

“A species much like us, but far, far superior. Stronger, smarter, and they hold a magic we can never understand.”

“Are you speaking of aliens?” The look on his face showed he might think her crazy.

She took a sip of brandy and enjoyed the warmth as it went across her tongue, down her throat and to her belly. “I guess many would call them that, but their species name is Valarian. They are a demon.”

His gaze widened. “Demon? As in the demons of Hell? Are they those creatures that have been seen on the news?”

“No. The ones on the news are their enemy. Unfortunately, we are caught up in the middle of their war. This is a war to stake a claim on a long-lost city.” She leaned forward and was now excited. “The Valarians are the lost people of Atlantis. They have been living among us for centuries.”

He took a deep breath. Likely to calm himself. “This story is very farfetched, you realize. I would recommend you seek help. You have obviously been through a lot and it’s understandable your mind would concoct a story to help you deal. I know some very reputable psychiatrists that would take your case.”

Now she was a case? She took another long sip of her drink before setting it on the table. “It was a bad idea for me to come back here.”

Jeff stood. “Sheila, we need to call the authorities, and you need to tell them who took you. I will assist you in getting the help you need.”

Something about his words seemed off to her. He would assist her? That wasn’t what you said to someone you loved. It was too cold. “Jeff, I realize I have been gone for a long time and I would not blame you one bit if you moved on. But you need to be honest with me. Is there another woman?”

He looked to the floor, which told her there was.

“I didn’t mean to have an affair, but I was broken and, well… things happened.”

“I understand. And now? Do you love her?”

“Don’t try to complicate things, Sheila.” He started for the cell phone that sat on his desk. “We need to get you some help.”

“There’s nothing wrong with me.” She started toward him, but a crash froze her in place. Splintering wood, which happened to be the library door being smashed open, quickly followed by six Concosa demons who filed into the room. Sheila’s heart stuttered as her panic attack threatened to take over.

“They’re here for me,” she whispered.

“Dear god, Sheila, what do they want with you?”

“Their leader wants me back. My special talents in the DNA field are valuable to him.”

As the six demons stood there, their guns pointed at Jeff and her, their leader finally strode into the room.

“Well, look what we found, boys. I knew if I staked out this house, we would eventually get to you. Zolar will promote me for bringing you back.” He stepped into her space. “He is very displeased that you left him.”

She looked at Jeff, who was so pale he appeared as if he might faint. It quickly became apparent to her she was on her own in this fight.

CHAPTER15

The moment he sensed her fear, he knew Sheila was in trouble. As he formed a portal, he summoned Fang, who was right behind him as he stepped into the swirling darkness. His blood bond took him straight to her and when he appeared, it only took him a second to assess the situation. Talon was already on scene and dispatching a Concosa and before Zander could blink, Fang had already spilled blood.

“Damn, that fucker’s fast.”

A Concosa closest to Sheila ran for her, but Zander intercepted as bullets sprayed the room. His anger was on steroids that they threatened her.His mate.

There was not an ounce of doubt in his mind that she was Lomara come back to him. It all made sense now that he knew about the scrolls. Lomara had been a very gifted Valarian. Her magic was powerful for a demon not of royal blood.

He summoned his power and tossed a shield of protection over her and the human male who currently lay on the floor. At least now he could concentrate on fighting. That was, if Fang left anyone for him to kill. The Daldara had already ended two, and the commander had fled. They needed to hurry this up before reinforcements, or Zolar himself, showed up. Zander wasted no more time. He produced a throwing star and flung it. His aim was accurate as it landed in the jugular of his enemy. It didn’t take the demon out but gave Zander the second he needed to jump the Concosa, shoving the demon to the ground while he pulled his pistol and shot the prick in the heart. As the demon turned to ash, he rolled, jumped to his feet and took out a fourth Concosa with another well-placed bullet.

His senses were on high alert, and he scanned the area for more danger. They were alone, for the moment at least, so he shoved his pistol back into his holster. “Fang and Talon, best clean up our mess.” He stormed to Sheila and removed the protection he had placed over her.
